Always liked the black Les Paul, two or three pups. I'm saving for my Elferink over the next ten months, otherwise I'd be tempted to pick up an Epiphone LP for fun, maybe change the pups. Must resist...

My friend always wanted me to play an LP, but being a large fellow, an LP looked more like a Mandolin...
So, he went out and got the ES-139, shaped just like a LP, but slightly larger, and hollowed body (w/o F-holes) makes it much lighter (6.5lb) than normal LP's. Has a killer growl with Burstbuckers...
but... It still looks like a Mando when I play it...
Here's some poop from the Factory... "Includes Gig Bag" is my favorite part...
The heavy tones of a Les Paul without the weight.
The Gibson Memphis ES-139 with the familiar style of the world's greatest guitar, the Les Paul, but at an average weight of 6.5 lbs. and the superior semi-hollow construction that breathes new tonal air into an admired ancestor's appearance. The new single cut body shape looks like Rock, and features 2 Burstbucker Pro's, with Stopbar and an ABR bridge with single volume and tone controls. The weight-relieved centerblock goes without f-holes for a high volume performance without feedback problems. Other features are CTS Pots, "Orange Drop" capacitors and a quartersawn maple neck. The ES-139 is 100% American made in Memphis, TN. Includes gig bag

Les Pauls are gorgeous guitars. You can play anything with them if You want.
But did Les Paul invent it? Gibson director Ted McCarty (the guy who invented the TOM bridge in about 1955) has an interesting story to tell:

The great Jack Pearson sounds great playing jazz on a chambered (I have been informed) Les Paul:

The two videos posted by feet (two posts above) really do have snippets of a good jazz tone, in fact I loved the jazz tone of the blue guitar. Very impressive playing too.

Very jealous! I'll show it to my wife - she makes me a new jumper every year. Then we must form a guitar and jumper duo!

At times I've been gassing for an ES-Les Paul, but those are a guitar of their own. A semi-hollow with a very small center block.

Les Pual it's one of my favorite guitar !
but I like the R series : R8 R7 or R9 ( I do not have )

I did this video of some of my favorite Al DiMeola songs a while ago.
While I should have played everything in this video with overdrive, I didn't. Because I think, clean is better. And a Les Paul is a great guitar to play Jazz on. Progressive, Modern, Bebop - you name it.
Lets face it, you can play all kinds of music on all different types of Guitars. I single out the Les Paul because of its sustain. You don't have to play it hard to get a lot out of it. And that helps a soft touch player like me.
Thanks.

You crazy shredder!

I admit I'm not a Les Paul fan but I saw Pat Martino play the other night and couldn't help but think that all those glorious sounds he was making looked like they were coming out of basically a glorified "Les Paul"!
-
Anyone tried an Epiphone Florentine? Very light weight, apparently.
-
What's the string length on Pat's guitar? Same as a Les Paul?
-
I will never part with my faithful Les Paul Standard bought brand new with my low income job money as a student back in 1992.
I played mainly metal, progressive rock, fusion and jazz on it since the early '90s.
Its still stock except for its collapsed Nashville pot metal bridge replaced by a Pinnacle Machined Steel
The only reason it gets less play time these days is my poor back¸but I dig its tone and sustain, I get a very descent jazz tone too.Last edited by vinlander; 06-06-2017 at 12:07 PM.
