Ya'll excuse me, I'm FLOATING... Remember the thread started about 5 weeks ago for the Heritage Auctions, including many George Benson owned and played guitars (some D'Angelico and a D'Aquisto) ?? Well I got in the first day the bidding was available and bid the moon. Sitting here watching the days slowly tick away. So today at 1pm CDT the bidding started and it goes quick. 2nd item in the pile was the guitar I was after and DANG I won it at what I think is a very reasonable price for a guitar so widely used by my hero... Here's a video. Once the instrument arrives we'll do a full blow centerfold of her... Can't wait...
Circa 1990 Ibanez George Benson GB Red Semi-Hollow Body Electric Guitar. One of George Benson's personal prototype GB model guitars. Shows signs of play, and was only previously owned by Benson. Original hard case included. Condition: Good. Selections from The George Benson Collection.

So you won THAT guitar? Very cool! Now you'll sound just like GB!
-
Mike, you are a Certified Benson nut job! I'm close, but haven't been 'certified' yet.

That's a one-off custom, correct?
Does it come with any documentation or autographs from the man?
-
Mikey,
YOU DID IT!!!
YES!
Damn that's cool. What a catch bro. Oh my god.
While the legend is still with us, hang onto that guitar. Because when he is gone (hopefully 30 years from now, after 45 more albums), Game used George Benson gear is going to be highly sought after.
But for now, sleep with it every night.
Good for you, Joe D.
PS, when he is 105 years old, he is gonna do a tribute album to Bruno Mars..

Congrats!!
What a piece of history to have in your possession! I remember setting up guitars that were going to "the man" and thinking Wow! He's going to be playing THIS. That's nothing compared to owning something he not only played, but performed on.
Enjoy it Mike, enjoy the spirit he put into that guitar. Lucky guy!
You should let GB know he can visit anytime he misses his baby...
David

I've posted this before (& may well post it again)

Ok so let me run this down to you. I have a young friend who is close to Mr. Benson and over the years I've been good to this kid. He's really come along too. So when I told him that: a) I was going to Benson's show here in Chicago tomorrow night and b) was bidding on that guitar he went crazy trying to help me. He did talk to George Tuesday night and arranged for back stage passes for me for after the show. AND he told George about my bidding to win on the red GB5.
If this puts it in any perspective, George has so many guitars, especially ones Ibanez has made him, that he didn't even know which one it is. LOL... This one has Alumitone pickups in it. Now for all the lawyers in the crowd "was it THE guitar used in the video". Hard to say. This one had signs of tape on the f-holes and is in "good" condition, meaning it has been played a lot. For me It's George's red GB5 and I got it through stuff he was selling on HA.COM... I'll know what kind of papers it comes with. Frankly I'm not gonna be kicking it out of bed if it doesn't have papers. LOL...
Interesting there were a number of items that I thought would go way out there price wise - namely a Gibson Chet Atkins given to GB by Chet... I figured it would go nuts, well it had an opening bid price of $3500.00 and someone bid on it early (like I did the GB5) but only maybe one or two counter bids came in so that buyer also got a good deal...
All that aside I'm just pumped I won one of his guitars. End of story. I've had serious wood for that red GB5 since I saw a video of him playing it live at Vienne some 12-14 years ago on YouTube. I was like SCHWING as soon as I saw it...

Amazing score, to win a GB5 that was actually from G.B. ! Red, and rare (as far as I know, not being familar with any GB5's to date), I can see the attraction as desibable + functional + collectable.

Mikey,You're going to run out of room in your place if you keep buying. Me and the entire forum will be waiting to help you "thin out the herd" when you're full up. But, while there's room, ENJOY!!

Wow! I have always loved the look of that guitar in his videos. I can't imagine owning it and feeling the vibes running through it! Congrats.

Like I have always said George is the reason I play guitar. I was a clarinet player. In 1972 I heard White Rabbit. George's tone and tasteful playing blew off my socks. Next payday I bought a guitar. Thanks George !
God bless you Mike. Your life went from a black storm to a beautiful glowing rainbow. We all rejoice with you.
