George has done great things in his professional life. But I am sure he would be thrilled with how he turned a perfectly matured adult into a little kid again. The unbridled joy we are all seeing here is spectacular.
Enjoy Mikey. All the other kids in the neighborhood are really happy for you.

Mike, that is quite a story man. I would frame that picture of you and him. Also, the pickguard, are you going to play with it on or enshrine it?

The Palen sold for $3750.00. All the guitars were going for very affordable prices I thought. For instance, a 1944 Martin 0-18 flat top for $1625, a 1968 Gallagher 12 string for $1250, a 1972 Martin D-18 flat top for $2500. I think you should be able to see more prices at

The '68 Super 400CES went for $5750. It looked to be in superb condition.

seriously, its a big deal. the nearest one is like 25 miles from here. i've only had it once. i can't imagine your joy. couldn't have happened to a better dude.

Gotta remember fellas quoting those prices, there's the buyers premium, taxes, service fees and the like. BUT and you all see it in my joy - to have a shot at a guitar YOUR HERO played some, or in my case gigged with regularly, well shucks its a lifetime opportunity... There was a LGB30 prototype, that's the $1099.00 sort of ES175 type guitar, comes out of China, nice guitar. This was the prototype made for George in Japan before China started cranking them out (well done too). They wanted almost what I paid for Red, but had a best offer, I thought "out the door for 2k, to have another of his guitars, I'd run the table and offer 2k", the software was setup to automatically reject anything under $2500.00 - no thanks... I just walked away with my winnings...

?Wow, Big, great story - truly a night to remember!

What a great back story. Thanks for sharing Mike

Tough getting out early and back home waiting until almost 4pm for FedEx to show. Worth the wait. She is slender like a Byrdland, about 15 3/4 wide I think and has a fast neck. The bridge was wrapped in tissue in the case pocket. She's got a Certificate of Authenticity from Heritage Auctions. The flame is very consistent, thin flames, really sweet. Didn't have the bridge placed right at first (in these photos). Got that straightened out in the following batch. Doggone artist owned guitars sure are made so nicely and setup so sweetly. WOW.
I can see this is gonna be one of those you turn the lights down for, put on "Turn On The Lamplight" and come in the room slowly for. LOL... A redhead... My goodness. It has these thin ebony sheets inside the f-holes that slide out of the way or slide to cover the f-holes.
Too cool !!

?My neighbor Dolores (the one who went to the concert with me) came over and shot these from the other side of the bushes... Bridge is in the right place now and it's all so gorgeous.... "My heart's on fire, come on now make me, oh my darling my sweet" (Moody's Mood)... "Oh pretty baby, you make me feel so good, take me by the hand. Come let us visit our love, in that new Promised Land. Maybe then we can find, a good place to take our loving state of mind. Oh my Baby, won't you let me love and get a release from this awful misery"....

Wow Mikey. I've never seen the the Ebony hideaway fhole covers. What a brilliant idea. I wonder if that was George's idea or maybe a modification that he suggested?
You know a lot of these guitars get bought up by people who hog em up and are too snewty to share them with with the world. Not this guitar. It found its way into the perfect home.
Mike I know what kind of good guy you are. How you took care of Patrick's family. You are a special guy. You deserve all the happiness this guitar brings.

The Alumitones, he said it sounds real good with them in
-
beautiful Mike and pedigree with the documentation. Very happy for you.

Those are strange Alumitones. The pole pieces are odd. Alumitones have two parallel but offset magnets. I don't know what the pole pieces do.
These must be experimental or something. Hmm.
The guitar is beautiful! Congrats.

Just gave it a quick run thru my Princeton Reverb. The pickups sound great !!! Definitely not Filteron thin, hum bucker sound more but with lots of sparkle and definition. The placement of the screws is interesting, reminds me just a tiny bit of pickups used in Super Chet models. There is a chance I will be talking to him and I'll ask him what's what and did he have some input into the design of them. The guitar does not glow in the dark by the way but I heard strains of Mambo Inn when coming down the hallway at 2am for a drink of water.

Big,
I'd be inclined to leave the George Benson blood, sweat, and tears on the instrument, rather than buff and clean everything out. If it were me--all respect to Joe--I'd not sanitize all the "George-ness" out of the guitar.
Just sayin'

GT, Thanks for the response.. Of course, it was a bad attempt at humor on my part. You are absolutely right.

Hey Big~ I see that there are foam inserts in the F-holes. You know that was GB's requirement for playing that big box as loud as he does. Another cool and very personal part of an amazing instrument!
If it were mine, I'd get one of these...

Well reading the description of the guitar in the auction ad, compared to other guitars he had listed I thought it might be a bit of a beater.
Circa 1990 Ibanez George Benson GB Red Semi-Hollow Body Electric Guitar. One of George Benson's personal prototype GB model guitars. Shows signs of play, and was only previously owned by Benson. Original hard case included. Condition: Good. Selections from The George Benson Collection.
But it looked like it's brand new. "Shows signs of play", hardly. It's perfect... My neighbor Dolores says "the pictures don't show how red it is". She's right. LOL...
It's really a sweetheart.

Aside from the ebony looking things that sort of slide out of the way (I've only moved the bass side one a bit and then closed her back up). Foam inserts, I don't know. I know after market he has a lot of special things done to all his guitars. They're not stock. My young friend has told me that repeatedly. She's just a joy to play fellas... I've never had two guitars with necks so easy to get along with: Red and that bowl backed K Yairi with he brazilian rosewood lion pickguard. At that level there is a fit and finish that's mind blowing.
When we were in his dressing room Dolores was kidding me that I need a big case for it. I told them the story of knowing a guy at Fujitsu in Santa Clara that had a big Hummer (in 2000) and he belonged to a Silicon Valley Hummer group. They'd have weekend caravans along Hwy. 35 and though the back roads of Woodside the way motorcyclists do. It's a very scenic area. At the end of the rally they'd all head up into the hills to Steve Wosniak's place and hang out. In his living room The Woz had a big glass case. Inside was the Epiphone Casino that John Lennon used in the last American concert The Beatles played, it was at Candlestick Park. The case was not locked and remarkably any number of guys just walked up, opened the case, took out the doggone guitar and played it like they were in Guitar Center. From what my buddy said The Woz was unphased by it... True story.Last edited by BigMikeinNJ; 05-31-2017 at 08:36 PM.

Ten minutes of my playing and I'd scare out any George Benson left on that beautiful guitar.
