Thank you guys! Hammertone brought the heat! The guy was asking $2500 and then $1900. Now, he said the absolute lowest he'd do is $1700. It does play very nice...

I wonder why the CC is so crooked.

It could just be the angle of the pic. I don't think it looked crooked straight on.

get that deteriorating pickguard off, too, before it eats into the guitar....
    My thoughts as well.

Maybe a great player, but no resale value whatsoever.

A good neck is not cheap. A professionally fitted, angled, carved and re-inlayed headstock is time consumng. More than building a guitar/neck from scratch.
There's professional quality in that guitar. And you won't find another if it's got mojo.
When I lived in NY Uminov had a Gibson Les Paul custom re necked by Jimmy D'Aquisto. It was a grand. That was a lot. It was Jimmy's neck and headstock. I regret. REGRET leaving that there.
You know what you need. Good luck. $1,500 waved under his nose. I would not resent that price.
    Hope you wind up happy

I was wondering about the inlays, spruce and cutaway too. I have never seen a 40 something 175 though so I assumed those differences were because of the age but I guess not. That would affect the price of course (in your favor) but doesn't make the guitar any less cool.

If you have proof that Jimmy Foster did all the work then it should always have some fans, especially in the 7 string world. Jimmy was not only a fine builder, he was also a 7-string pioneer as both a player and builder. He may not be well known here but he has a solid niche group of followers.

If you love it $1700. is a very good price for a quality built archtop , 6 or 7 string!

I decided to pass on this and instead bought a 7 string Jimmy Foster Basin Street model. My guitar instructor has one and it is the most comfortable guitar I have played.

I would guess that Jimmy Foster would have enough respect for a vintage Gibson that he would refuse to do such a thing. If the neck was destroyed in a car accident, maybe. But if you're going to the trouble to replace a neck and make a guitar something it was never meant to be, why the hell would you not replace a rotting finger rest. The whole thing stinks to me.

Jimmy Foster died 6 years ago, he was a hell of a nice guy, very good musician and a very skilled luthier. He worked on a couple of my guitars in the mid eighties. I highly doubt Jimmy Foster had anything to do with an outgassing finger rest. I imagine he did this years ago. Its a tool not a museum piece. At least it was played and not gutted for parts.
