I like my Snark ... and I like no pedals, right now.

Maybe a Strat with two springs? :-)

Ha, I remember a Joe Pass video of him picking up to play either an Epi or Ibanez and crabbing that nobody tuned it for him before he arrived.

I have been using tonalenergy tuner which is an app and it is fantastic but being on the phone it is really only useful to use for practice or before gigs/during set breaks. I have used several cheap clip ons because they are easy to use silently when I am not playing at a gig but the ones I have used (including snark) have really been subpar and are too approximate for me. Tonalenergy will still be something I use, though, because it is extremely quick to grab notes and is very useful for double bass practice and teaching - it has a percentage that tells you how long you have been playing and what percentage of time you have been in tune, customizable to the kind of instrument you play, very easy to read screen (with a green smiley face when you are in tune that is cute and students really like). It is top notch and although there are other good tuner apps like Cleartune, tonalenergy was good when it launched but now years later it is amazing how good it has gotten. I am really excited to try this TC clip on though and have accurate tuning at any time during a gig, if it is as good as it looks.

I have read other online reviews of some of their pedals that seem to indicate build quality issues. I am hoping the tuner will not have problems since there are no foot switches and it is hard to mess up a tuner (I hope...)

Exactly. Dat's what I've been a sayin.

Haha! No Bigsbys, but I have 6 guitars out all the time. Just going through the rotation and I am bound to find one that needs a touch up tuning. I have a Seiko tuner with a needle that seems pretty accurate. The clip on that I have is sometimes accurate, but sometimes off by 005 hz. or so.

I would say that on half the gigs i need to retune a little in the pauses. Sometimes when during a set temperature and humidity change, which is easily the case when more and more people enter the room, i find myself in need to tune more than just a little before the next set.
I've been using the clip on SNARK HZ which someone recommended here and like it a lot. I attach it only when tuning and place it on the amp when i'm not using it. Over the years i have used quite a few others, but this is the one i like best, because it seems to be accurate, has the option to display the exact frequency the string produces, plus it is small and nice to handle. I never had any problem picking up sound from other instruments, but i do not play with big bands and if i end up on stage with a loud drummer i'm careful to place myself in healthy distance.

Four pedals and the clip-on, no issues

For guitar it is just fine and definitely the best clip on tuner I have ever used, but for double bass practice and teaching I will keep using tonalenergy.

I have/had many different tuners. The TC Polytune is my favorite especially since they come in black now. (less obvious hanging off a head stock). Also the clip on the Polytune s strong; stronger then the Peterson Clip on whoch is the most accurate. The Polyclip has a strobe mode so it can mimic the Peterson.
I always pack an extra CR2032 battery.

I've read that the batteries don't last long but can't find info on just how long. Any approximations?

The Polytune batter life is pretty good; better then the Peterson.

Peterson StroboClip. Reverb $3 Clip-On tuner will get the job done, as well.
-
I practice without pedals, just some amp reverb and tune the orchestra way, getting a reference A out of whatever is handy and tuning to it.
-
the tc is alright. solid. good enough. but it isn't a turbo tuner. nothing is.

yes

+1 on the TC Electronics clip on tuner. It is far better than any of the others I had. It really works well, even in loud environments. I had given up on the clip ons, but this one really works and is super convenient.
