Thanks Vernon, when I make the speaker cab it will be with a 10" baffle and a 12" one as it would be good to test 10" as well. I don't recognize any of the speakers you mention, they may not be available in the UK, but I would not go to 8". Of the 10" I have heard sound samples of the Lil Buddy from Eminence which sounds very good. Celestion also have a gold and a cream that have possibilities. The problem now is how to obtain speakers to test without having to buy them all! In 12 " my favourite is the Hempdog followed by C.Rex (both Eminence) as Hempdog is not available here at the moment that leaves me with just one 12" so if I accept just Lil Buddy in the 10" it would be worth buying both and selling off the reject. It looks as though I have reached a satisfactory conclusion thanks to the good forum members of "Jazz Guitar". Putting the amp in a smaller cab will be a good thing to do, as a combo it is quite heavy. The speaker cab will also be more manageable and should give a better sound which will probably be as a result of being closed back or ported.

For those who have problems with 'beamy' cabinets and want to try a DIY solution, try the "Mitchell Doughnut".

Well following all of the good advice from forum members and considering the weight of my Classic 30 I decided to chop it in for a DV Mark Micro-50 which I have to say is brilliant. Given the lack of enthusiasm for 15" I decided against one and it was just as well I did because the Micro-50 has so much bottom end all the bass on both the amp and guitar has to be dialled out, it would have been too much on a 15" speaker. The chosen speaker was a Cannabis Rex which has so much recognition for jazz by plenty of forum members. The cab, I made this from 18mm Birch ply the back has a removable centre section should it be needed. Even the two ports will probably go when I change the grill cloth that is not much better than sack cloth. A new front will also have to be made. At a later date I will also be trying the 10" Lil Buddy in a matching cab, this will give choices of either or both. The 12" cab is 20x16x12 inches. The Micro-50 is very impressive has plenty of mellow warmth and as much bass as anyone could ask for. There is also plenty of highs without shrill. With the Bass dialled out, the Middle at 80% and Treble at 30% I have all of the mellow warmth I was looking for plus a wonderful chime, perfect result (for the time being?). Who knows what's next. The guitars in the second picture.......you will recognise the ES175 Premium, the other, see my other post of today RGD. The next project which has been in a multitude of design stages is a carved all wood Archtop that has evolved from information gained from this site although the wood and some of the hardware and the second change of p/up have all been collecting dust in the workshop for over a year. Construction and finished photos will appear here when completed early next year.

Apart from the ominous look the ports give the cabinet, I'd say awesome! It's interesting to here good things about that little amp, as we are just talking about the 50W Quilter 101 Mini Reverb.

Since last contributing to this discussion, I lucked into what has become maybe the best 1x15 combo amp yet for me. A Lil Dawg D-lux. Had heard of this guy before, had never seen one of his amps. This one is a souped up tweed deluxe essentially, can run 6L6s as well as 6v6s. The original owner loved the amp, wanted to hear it with a 15" speaker. So he had a pine custom cab built for it, with an Eminence 151 ceramic speaker.
Some tube upgrades later, this turns out to be a wonderful amp, especially so with the Heritage H575. Running the amp with old Tung Sol 6v6s now. I spend hours practicing are modest volumes, can't get enough of that fat, warm sound.
I've had that Eminence speaker before in other amps. Appreciated it before, but not as much as with this particular amp.

Thanks for the reply Mad Dog, you can't be mad if you do jazz and isn't it great when we get gear to suit our taste.
