I've got a Lyle L5 that's got Gibson pickups and pots from a jazz guitar shop in the 80's. Don't remember the specific pickups as it's been awhile. Sounds and plays nice. Shop owner had a Super 400 and this played nearly as nice so I was pleased. I use an old Ampeg very simple tube amp and the 10" speaker I use with it is starting to crackle.

I love the deep mellow sounds of the 50's guys. Was thinking about making an open back box for a 15" maybe Legend or Big Ben.

    Thoughts ideas feelings alternatives?

I don't gig anywhere it's just personal enjoyment.

You just can't beat a good 15" speaker. Savage Audio has a JBL and an Altec for sale and Midwest Speaker in Roseville MN has several good used(guaranteed) 15" speakers for sale. Both in the $100.00-150.00 price range. I almost bought the Altec 418.
    Thanks John

Those are more in the price range. The Jensen and Warehouse ones might be The Ideal, but above the budget. Will check them out, thanks.

Aren't those speakers bright? The OP wanted "deep mellow".

The JBL and Altec speakers are full range and clear. What you put in comes out. I don't know I would call them bright but compared to an old Jensen P15N they may sound that way because of the limited range of the Jensen. Don't get me wrong, I went with a 1968 Jensen Vibranto in my Fender Pro. I think the Vibranto falls some where in between the JBL and P15N. The Altec is very efficient too and closer to the JBL in my opinion. Then there is the EV 15M, strong lows but nice and clear. Check out speaker shops they usually have a variety laying around and will guarantee them.
    Thanks John

My recommendation for an open back cabinet for a Gibson would be the Weber 15A150A if you are up for a $200 plus speaker, or the 15A125A if you want to save some money and can deal with a slightly lower-wattage speaker.

Both speakers are beautiful sounding speakers. They do a great job recreating the old Jensen P-15N and P-15Q speakers, respectively.

I have had great luck with mine. The more expensive speaker is what I use in my octal preamp Fender Tweed Pro Amp (5C5). It gives the amp a bit less woolly sound for jazz. If you want to do more of a jump blues thing, go with the 15A125A or even the 15A100A.

I built a Tweed Pro from a Weber kit and it has the 15A150 (I think mine is a 15A150-O) - outstanding speaker. Very full sounding but not too stiff, lots of woody vintage'y character.

IIRC the 15A150-A is a ribbed cone and the 15A150-O is a smooth cone. The smooth cone would break up a little earlier and sound more 'woody & organic', the ribbed cone has more headroom and will have a brighter tone.

For home use either would be fine, you're probably not going to be turning it up to the point of speaker distortion.

Small amp ... not playing the Tele through this! Ha. Although I know one can do jazz with one. It's my rock setup and I rarely play it. Use want a smooth rickreal warm gentle sound for the arch top. Thanks for the comment!

I had a Big Ben in a Vibroverb clone for a while. I liked it a lot.

Give the Tele a try through an Ampeg and a vintage style 15" alnico speaker, and you'll never look back - trust me!

Hard to say what would work best, as every amp seems to be different. I've tried so many. My tastes run more to the ceramic 15" speakers. Favorites include the WGS G15C, Big Ben, Weber California w/paper dome, Altec Lansing 418.

I no longer have a 15" combo or cab, so have a few to sell (Weber California w/paper dome, original square magnet CTS from an old Ampeg Gemini II, Altec Lansing 418) if you happen to be in NJ.

Consider the Warehouse ceramic model; you don't need alnico.
