Original Gibson pick guards for the high end guitars like L5 and LeGrand are more transparent than any of the replacements i have seen. I wonder if it would be possible to get replicas which are as light and transparent as the originals.

I found the opposite to be true.
old Gibson guards were swirly and translucent, like this.

of course they vary from batch to batch but newer Gibson guards are generally more transparent

-
Exactly, i'm looking for the same material as these newer L5's show.

I'm not sure if this older material would be originally on a 1976 JS. My 1970 L5 which i bought used in about 1991 had the same transparent pickguard as the "newer Gibsons" before it deteriorated a few years later.

Take your pick. Then a shout out to Frank, fws6, to make you one.

I've had a bunch of Gibsons from the late 60s early 70s, they all had the old style material.
the old material was used into the 80s
old guards that start to outgas turn lighter in color over time, like this....
-
Why can't I find any of that marbled head-cheese material...?
-
good question Jabs.
Gibson was using it on their Lee Ritenour L-5's semi recently.
someone should try to make a batch again, there's a lot of pre '64 guardless Super 400's out there that could use it...

I don't think the R & F cellulose is the right stuff. I bought a piece to make an L-5 pickguard but it is too thin really, it is 1.5mm and it needs to be closer to 3mm, and I can't really remember but it may not even quite be big enough. I suppose it woudl work if it could be stuck to a clear sheet. I can't find any material like the original stuff anywhere.
-
My bad. I forgot about its 1.5mm depth. Too thin. Edit: You can laminate it on a clear 1.5mm acrylic sheet to make a 3mm pickguard.
This guy sells readymade L5CES-style pickguards G R Guitars .
What about this one?

Yes I think that is the only way to do it, the celluloid laminated onto a clear sheet. I bought some 3mm acrylic tortoiseshell, also from R & K. I actually think it is a very thin tortoiseshell material laminated between two clear 1.5mm sheets. It looks ok, but is quite dark. I really can't be bothered to laminate sheets, it is a real bore for a replacement guard, and if the binding is done well it looks good. So many of the commercial ones have such terrible quality binding.

I also dont have material that isnt exactly like Gibson, very close in color but a bit striped not curly pattern.
It is full thickness 5/32" material though not laminated. It looks good on the guitar to me, I havent found anything that is closer so far
some of the guards offered for sale on the net are not quite as good as youd want them to be on a prized guitar BTWLast edited by fws6; 09-29-2016 at 04:50 PM.

The guard on Stringswinger's Excel which he bought from Joe seems to be of quite transparent material. Does anyone know where this is coming from?

Write to Darren Hippner and ask him. He was the guitar-maker who sold the D'Angelico Excel to Joe.
-
Darren did not do the restoration on the Excel. I will contact the guitar collector in NY and see if he will tell me who did the restoration work.

I still have some was VERY expensive. Color and pattern close to Gibson but still not quite the same.

Most interesting:
This celluloid nitrate pickguard material is considered to be hazardous and therefore can't be shipped out of the US.

first question they ask @ the post office is "is it flammable or hazardous?"
that'd be a yes on both counts....

Stringswinger, could it be him:

That is the guy. You should contact him. He did the pickguard on my Excel 8 years ago. Perhaps he has some material left and can do a pickguard for you?
If I were you, I would hire Frank (fsw6). He is the expert.....

Frank "fsw6" sent me some killer PG material a few years back. Dont know if he still has any left but he has nice PG material. Bob
