Kind of an odd question, but I spend hours practicing with my dog Charlie at my feet. I play mostly acoustic when I practice, but if I want to record or whatever, I plug in. Charlie doesn't mind at all until I plug in and turn on my Carvin Vintage 16 tube amp. As soon as I turn it on Charlie starts looking for a place to hide. Its my only tube amp, so I can't see if another tube amp has the same effect.

Have any of you noticed your dog's aversion to tube amps? I guess I'm wondering if there is some high frequency coming from the tubes. Its frustrating, and as a result I no longer use the amp, I mean I can't keep doing that to Charlie. Might it be crappy tubes? Any advice appreciated

Are you playing loud or with distortion? My dogs don't mind as long as I keep the volume low.

Looking at the Vintage 16 on Carvin's website I see that it has a Cabinet Voiced Line Out and an Internal Load (speaker off), maybe for recording you could use the Line Out with Internal Load and headphones from your DAW.

I once had a goldfish that swam to the front of the tank when I sat in front of the tank and played acoustic guitar!

With any pets or other creatures, there is a big capacity for them to remember any negative associations with anything. If there was ever a loud noise or pop, they will forever remember it. Pavlov had a Marshall stack. The dogs were always on the run!

My dog digs loud music. The more I crank the amp, the closer he gets to it.

    Go figure.

My dog loves it when I play. Totally puts him in another zone. Lays down and listens. Better than my wife, and she's pretty good about it. Doesn't matter which guitar, acoustic, amplified, he loves it. I never play loud, and I'm always careful to turn the amp off before plugging in or out. Hates hair dryers however.

An old friend of mine, who was well-to-do, decided to revisit her glory as a drummer after some 25 years of not playing. She bought an expensive set and there must have been 25 different pieces including cymbals, drumheads, cowbells, high-hats, you name it.

Her little, old beagle would come in the room with her and lay on his side, even though the cacophony was way too loud for my human ears. I could not even hear my SuperChamp XD, which I had at "10." ( I think she took some sort of perverse pleasure in drowning me out - she always was competitive)

Also, when I crank up my Marshall 100-watt, I have to run my own dog downstairs.

I really don't know how an animal with such sensitive ears can stay in a loud practicing environment. Poor doggies....

I'm wondering if there could be some tube microphonics or a leaky capacitor emitting something the dog can hear?

I have jazz cats. Seriously. They come in to hang when I practice (LOL -- I'm not kidding)

I also have a parrot who will sing along with acoustic guitar in the dining room.

I agree with Gnappi. There must be some high frequency that is driving your dog nuts.

What happens if you just turn on the amp and do NOT have a guitar plugged into it? If he still hides, that would suggest the amp itself has a bad (to dogs) frequency coming out of it. I know you said that the Carvin is your only tube amp, but do you also have a solid state amp? If so, what happens when you turn that one on (without a guitar, and then again with your guitar plugged into it)? Just trying to isolate the effect of the amp vs that of the guitar or some interaction between the guitar and the amp...

I have two cats. They chill out and listen when I'm playing, but if I turn up the amp too much they don't like it. Animals seem to have very sensitive hearing compared to us humans.

Okay, but is it really when you "turn up the amp" too much, or when you "play the guitar through the amp too loud"? This distinction should help to narrow down the culprit...

It's when I play the guitar through the amp too loud. I'm using a Quilter Aviator SS amp.

I should have said so, but no, I don't play loud at all. Its something about the amp I believe, although I'm intrigued by the idea of Charlie having some negative association from a loud pop plugging in.

Good stuff to think about. I have to watch and see if he reacts to just the amp on without playing through it. I do have several solid state amps and Charlie does not mind them at all, even if I turn it up a bit. I also think I'll read up a bit on the tubes in that amp and see if they can emit high frequency noise. Thanks!

My dogs have always liked the guitar, clean or distorted. They also liked napping on my pedal board which led me to rack mount effects after deciding flea collars for the floor units were too much clutter. Last night I cranked up a Randall RG 120 1 15 to demonstrate the weird disparity between the jazz channel and the rock channel..... and they hopped on the couch to relax. They also like tube amps which I use more often, my dog does however act fatigued if a 12 string isn't in perfect tune.

A friend of ours has a dog who starts to howl in utter pain when I begin to play. That's even when playing acoustic. I prefer to believe it has nothing to do with how I play .....

I love dogs but my wives have always loved cats. So guess what we have. Cats! Anyway,my white rag-doll,Lilly,will sing along with me as I play. She loves country! Look out if I start whistling, then she climbs up my back. I think she is a reincarnated musician. Or perhaps a reincarnated audition judge.

Our baby loves music and particularly jazz...she has no problem listening to my noodling neither.
I recently got a PRRI and I don't think she react any different to that one, than to my cube.

She is still however a sensitive nature, being afraid of some noise like heavy wind and the vacuum.
We actually moved one level up in the top flat this summer, so no longer getting any elephant pounding shaking our wall and celling...she was getting more and more stressed..so were we!!

None of my animals were especially fond of the guitar playing. I had one cat that liked to lay on any guitar if I left the case open "on his bed", Ivy was a pretty mellow Maine Coon and anything went with him. I think it's the high frequencies - animals can hear more stuff we have no clue over - of course how they react is based on their personalities. Thus this cartoon I share with you all

My Bull Terrier Chloe hangs with me when I practice, however when my horn player comes over to practice she usually hides out. She would much rather be doing this:
