Thanks again for all the suggestions. I'm going to try the Fender 347, but can't find any info on the thickness in mm of the medium and heavy versions. My Gibson splash pick is .95 mm, so I'm guessing I'd want the 347 that is closest to that.
    Thank you!

    Len

seems like the material is similar to the Wegen?

Lol. I saw the Response but did not expect to see a Picture.

Armstrong always thought if he hit the exact right notes ...the picks would crawl out from between the Blocks....

The "Spotter" is looking at Armstrong instead of the Pyramid anyway- that's probably why they never found them...or are they like UFOs and Sasquatch ...?

To OP- don't get the wrong idea -
If a certain pick makes me sound a little better or play a little better- I will look for it too and order 100 !

Also thinking if there is a big demand for a certain Jazz Shape and material with a Group Buy ...someone like Dunlop may do a run.

I use these Gator Grip 2 mm they need to break in but they sound articulate and have a long period of sounding good for me...

Anyway...hope you find these mysterious picks.

That Gibson teardrop was my pick of choice also. When I couldn't find any I went to the Gibson heart shaped heavy. I believe that is also "eboneen". It's a very black smooth finish,if you're not familiar with it. I'm not sure if they still make the heart shape. It's a bit larger that the teardrop.

[QUOTE=Len R;675453]Gibson Heavy tear drop jazz pick. Can anyone rescue me? Thanks!! Hopefully, Len....

Hi after reading your post deciced to track one down, no luck in the Gibson, however i normally use the JD Jazz III black,
i have for last year been playing with not the bottom pointed side but , with the other side the rounded side tip.

Anyway i had JD JazzTone 205 not bad a bit too pointy, also briter than JAZZ III,

A couple of weeks got the JD Jazztone 204 fantastic the bottom point is rounded, the shape looks very close to your Gibson picture, it seems to be warmer than the JD 205, I think it is great.

    Might be worth looking at.

Back around the turn of the century I bought a bunch of the Gibson teardrop heavy picks, and I still have some of them left.

I recently purchased a bag of the Dunlop 485s heavy that were mentioned in this thread.

The Gibsons are very slightly larger than the Dunlops. They also feel slightly thicker. I don't have a micrometer to measure the thickness.

I wanted to see if I could tell if they're made of the same material.
I weighed 50 of each on a sensitive scale: the Gibsons averaged 0.636g each, while the Dunlops averaged 0.600g each. However, because they weren't the same size, the difference in mass is inconclusive.

I'm not a chemist, so there aren't any chemical tests I can try. My wife said I could swallow them all and see what happened, but that's just because she thinks I'm crazy.

After all that, I'm afraid I don't know whether they're made out of the same material.

I had a stock of Gibson GG-50H, and as a result of this thread I bought some of the Dunlop and Pickboy picks to see how they compared. I've now played with the Dunlop and Pickboy picks (heavies) to see whether they feel like the Gibsons. This is my subjective review of them all, to describe which I thought was most similar to the Gibsons.

The areal sizes of all of the picks is slightly different, but they're close enough that I didn't notice a difference while playing.

The Dunlop feels slightly thicker than the Gibson to me (this contradicts what I said previously. That probably means the two picks are about the same thickness, or that the variability between picks is sufficient that nominally identical picks felt a little different). I don't have a micrometer to measure the thicknesses.

The Pickboy feels about the same thickness as the Gibson.

The Dunlop sounds slightly darker to me (admittably subjective) than the Gibson.

The Pickboy sounds about the same as the Gibson.

The Pickboy surface feels about the same as the Gibson while playing, but the Dunlop feels slightly different (might just be the thickness). That's odd, because both the Gibson and Dunlop are smooth, while the Pickboy is tactily (sp?) not as smooth. But this is what it felt like while playing.

Conclusion: the Pickboy, to me, seemed most similar to the Gibson GG-50H. I would buy more.

Not sure whether I'm being over-critical of the Dunlops. In practice, I think all of these are close to each other.

Jim Hall seems to use Fender or Dunlop 347 shape celluloid pick. It's a celluloid pick for sure. Here it can be seen. This is from the video A Life In Progress, found on Youtube. In search of Gibson tear drop jazz pick !-screen-shot-2017-01-02-22-23-58-jpg

I haven't tried the Dunlop's version of the celluloid 347 shape. I would like to hear if someone has some experiences about the differences of fender and dunlop 347 shape.

Ah, sorry for the late reply.

Well, the pick is bigger than a Jazz III but not massively big, at first I thought it was gonna feel weird but no. Is really comfortable.

It is thick and beveled, so it will never feel like it gets stuck while plucking.

It's sound is fuller than with a thin pick for sure, the only drawback is that makes more noise when you stop a string before plucking compared to a jazz III.

After my initial reply I cannot say I use the S3 for everything, since different pick shapes and thickness give you a different sound I just grab the one I need for a specific task.

I bought the S3 mainly for Gypsy Jazz, then I found is good for Jazz Ballads and the best thing for swing chords for example. A Jazz III will sound cleaner for soloing.

Recently I got this one and like it a lot too mainly because is BIG, very pointy for solo and thick for chords.

but if neither one those things are an issue, I HIGHLY recommend red bear. it is hard to beat the tone of lab grown tortoise shell.

I played those Gibson teardrop picks for years and was convinced I couldn't use anything else. When I finally ran out, I got some regular old Fender picks and just got used to them. Hasn't hurt my playing and one less thing to worry about. But then, I'm not as "picky" as some guitarists.... You gotta be happy with your pick!

I'm happy with my Blue Chip picks. Expensive, but IMO worth it. AFAIK they don't offer teardrop shapes, but their XR model is vaguely shaped like that.
