jim hall did inded play a les paul...with staple alnico v pups...on the early chico hamilton stuff...he later traded that guitar to howard roberts for the famous p-90 equipped es-175....

and even though the es-175 through the gibson ga-50t amp is considered the classic jim hall tone for many...he really didn't sound that much different with the les paul!

Yeah. I've seen that picture before. Cool. I have also seen the clip of George Benson playing with Jack McDuff where Benson uses a Les Paul Custom. And, he sounds like...George Benson.

Still, when I have used a Les Paul (admittedly, strung with Ernie Ball strings) through my old dorm room amp (blackface Fender Vibro Champ), or through a solid-state combo amp, it sounded more like the thinner, colder sound that you hear on some of the Les Paul recordings. OTOH, if I let it rip through my Vibro-Champ...it was a different experience entirely.

Hall's Les Paul Custom sure sounds different than Coryell's Les Paul Custom, no?

coryell was using the lp and the hagstrom swede during his most r&r phase...probably had slinkys on them..and distortion..and he was LOUD!...he wasnt goin for jazz tone that earler jim hall had that's for sure...hah

franny beecher used a black lp with the staples too..he was a jazz guy..who played with bill haley for awhile

    cheers

ps- as per ^ coryells autumn in ny...very dry tone..as much about the recording as guitar..almost has an early les paul overdub kinda vibe...

i liked coryell alot, but he often had some weird tones going on...and slightly out tuning/intonation...he was enthusiastic tho...haha

    good stuff greentone

    Damn yur good..
Yes. It was the Lawsuit model I bought with my paper route money back in the late 70's.
I saw it hanging at a local SamAsh here in NJ last year. When it saw me, it started wagging back and forth on the wall hanger...

The headstock inlay and the Ibanez script were dead giveaways. I dig the post disco look.*itchin!

Are you sure that wagging 'back and forth' wasn't caused by the front door air lock opening and closing while you were staring up at that wall?

The album, put out by Guitar Player in '76, clearly states that Coryell was playing a Les Paul Custom on that cut--not the Hagstrom Swede that he frequently used at that time.
