It looks like Barney is playing an Ibanez in this video, but I can't tell which model it is. I really like the way it sounds. In fact, if I were to have heard the tracks without watching the video, I would have thought he was playing his trusty Gibson 350. I expected there to be more of a difference in sound with the contrast in pickups, but it turns out that the sound really is in the fingers.
Something else that surprised me about this video was the brilliant form that Barney was in. I enjoyed this trio every bit, if not more than, his critically acclaimed Poll Winners albums.

cannot find a link to a video ....

Sorry. Brain fart.

according to legend, an ibanez artist prototype that never went into production.
at least, that's what was said when it was being offered for sale a few years ago, can't remember where.
-
Has the same tailpiece as the FA series of 1978, and the cutaway of the FA100. But the whole series was either four knobs or zero knobs, and all had block inlays.
He is so good...

Could it have been recorded i Europe? More than a few of the Americal guitarists didn't want to subject their own old trusty guitars to the hardships in airports and on a flight across the Atlantic Ocean but borrowed instruments i Europe.

Right on, prototype Kessel model that never saw production.

When I was a teenager, I collected BK records and tapes. I had all his Poll Winners and solo stuff from the late 50s and 60s. Then I got into the Black Lion stuff. I thought it was super. One thing is for sure, BK just let it all hang out. Swing counted for so much more in his book than crisp, clean execution. I was a huge fan.
I've been watching this trio video for years and years. It's quite well recorded. That's Jim Richardson on bass and Tony Mann on drums.

some earlier but classic bk..with lady day...circa '55
btw barney had twin sons..they were phil spectors "bodyguards" for years and years..one of those brothers was who sold the bk ibanez...
cheers

Ibanez should have put chicken head knobs on it. Barney would have endorsed it then!

I have gone to your site many times--one post helped me ID a guitar I have as an Aria Pro II FA70, for example.
Anyhow, I just wanted to stop and say "Thanks" for the good info you consistently post.
Now, back to our discussion of Barney's guitar...

Dang...I used to worry that BK would scratch the heck out of his guitar with that monster ring. No biggie, if he did--it was his ring and his guitar--but I would have removed the ring before picking up the guitar. Just sayin'.
-
How else would he prove that he won a Super Bowl?
-
Eddie Lang had a pinky ring on his picking hand that scratched up the top of his '28 L-5.
he picked close to the bridge a lot for single string work, but you can see the marks next to the fingerboard extension and on the guard in this pic.
this pic was taken when the guitar was only a couple/three years old, he was beating it up pretty good.

It appears to be an FA-100 as Travis pointed out but looks to have the depth of the FG-100 (slightly shallower than a full Es-175? Have a look I can't quite tell.
I think its a single pup slightly reduced body FA-100
That would have been an awesome little git. It sounds more like the Fg-100 than the FA-100 too.Last edited by Archie; 05-18-2016 at 07:49 AM.
