Is it me or does this Collings acoustic guitar sound more like an archtop? What's going on here?

The one(s?) Kreisberg plays on a couple of his records sounds quite similar to an archtop.

Call me inexperienced but I've never heard (on video at least) an acoustic guitar sound like an "almost" electrified archtop like this.

I was as inexperienced as you before listening to those records!

It's a small bodied flat top

They usually don't have the boomy bottom end like a standard dreadnaught or jumbo flat top

    Sounds good IMHO

Also, the high strings sound quite mellow for a flat top. Interesting guitar.
By the way, I am using those Throbak bronze strings on my '35 Gibson L-75 (round hole archtop) and am really pleased with the sound and feel.

Amazing sound. This is the absolute first time I've encountered an acoustic that sounds like this.

I'm going to purchase some Throbaks for my acoustic guitar. One day, I'll buy one of these small bodied guitars. Seriously. The sound isn't like a "regular" acoustic guitar sound.

    Collings does good work .......

There flattops aren't cheap ..... at least their flattop prices aren't as crazy as their archtop prices IMHO

honestly, there's nothing unusual about a hex core phosphor/bronze string...all the string makers make'm ie d'addario, martin, ernie ball etc etc

the throbak round core pb's are more unusual...cause of the old style round core

those small body guitars can sound like archtops...very focused tone..not deep body bass or super extended highs...that's why the fingerpickers and old time blues guys liked them..very direct tone that doesnt take up a lot of space in the soundscape

    cheers

hah..wouldn't disagree...just didn't want op to think that the tone he thought "like an archtop" was due to the strings..which are very common acoustic string type

    cheers

    Eric Skye is another example:

I've never had or even owned an acoustic that small and that's exactly how I missed the boat completely.
But if they don't play like an archtop I don't feel so bad now, ;-)

PS: Never heard of Eric Skye. Good stuff!

If your flat top can't play as good as your archtop, you need a better set up guy.

Not like I need one, but I've been drooling over Collings flattops ever since local jazz guitar guru Jerry Hahn showed me his. They look fantastic! Maybe some day . . .
