Sold a guitar for $1299 and got my bill yesterday. $143.00
Wow...For some reason their fee calculator shows it $10 less...Not that that makes a significant difference.
Reverb.com would be $84 for the same instrument. Neither is cheap.

If you believe there is a billing error, call Ebay. When I did they were very helpful and gave me an immediate adjustment.

Probably still less than a consignment shop.

just try to imagine what ebays making in a day ...
for doing almost nothing ...
-
This is why I only sell on craigslist. Might take longer but no shipping hassles and no fees.
-
Thats why its called
feEbay
It's just not worth it for me to sell on there anymore. There's so many free sites to sell on, I'd rather wait 2 weeks and keep 120 bucks.
-
I do lower priced stuff that I buy at auctions, flea markets, etc. on E-bay but for higher priced instruments and amps, etc., I try to sell on forums and Reverb.com. I also try, if possible, to pay or get paid with USPS money orders or cashiers' checks for big ticket items which bypasses the leeches at PayPal. I've never felt that using the 'gift' thing on PayPal was particularly ethical to pay for merchandise - occasionally, I'll just go ahead and give the seller the fee. You can also save a little on shipping if you get Fedex and USPS accounts.
-
It should be 10% selling fee, also the listing fee. The listing varies on bells and whistles you add to the auction. Then PayPal charges 3%. Still better than consignment from a store or owning a brick and mortar. But yeah, it can be expensive so it is crucial to account for all that before selling. I have lost money in the past as I have failed to calculate this properly.
-
what other sites do you list on? I don't belong to the gearpage. I tried to join recently just to sell but they're not accepting new registrations. I thought i'd list something on sevenstring.org but they require 100 posts prior to advertising in their forsale section.``

I'm usually selling high end recording equipment, so obviously, I frequent those sites more for selling. You being a fairly well known and "out in public" person should have no problem selling on those sites as people will feel less nervous as opposed to sending money to some stranger.
I can't believe TGP isn't accepting new members????
I would trade 1000 of the typical TGP'ers for 1 JZ...

I sold a D'Angelico for my dad on guitar-museum.com a few years back. No problems with that transaction.

that's an old post. I'm not on there anymore. Tried to rejoin in order to access the classifieds and got a message that they are no longer accepting registrations.

Craigslist means a face to face big dollar exchange with a total stranger.
I am old enough to remember the bad old days before the Internet when you had to ante up 20 bucks for a classified ad that few would read, or get killed in a sale to a music store.

Just a suggestion ( I have not used myself) but if you subscribe to vintage guitar magazine you are allowed one free print classified per month and online ads too (I think more than one?). The ads tend to be a mix of reasonable stuff that turns over, and way overpriced ridiculous dreamers ads that appear unchanged for months and months.

I don't disagree but CL brings it's own list of pitfalls, chief among them every Nigerian scammer from here to Christmas. And total waste-of-time tire kickers. And epic low-ballers. And..

Consignment in the shops around me are 20%, a pretty good chunk.

I haven't gotten many scam emails and they're easy to spot/delete. Same with waste of timers and low ballers, it's so easy to just hit delete on the email and wait for a good buyer to come along. No need to be emotionally invested in each lead.

so, i took your advice and posted my Ibanez Metheny and Carvin Holdsworth on craigslist. Zero replies on the metheny and a couple feeble trade offers on the carvin. A guy emailed me saying he wanted to buy the carvin so I brought it into the office today and he drove over and we went into a conference room where he played the guitar and chatted with me for a 1/2 hour. He ended up low-balling me and so it was a bit of a waste of time.
However, 10 minutes after he left, it sold on reverb.com so all is well...

I always pad in 5-10% over what I actually want on craigslist because everyone wants a deal. That way you can knock $50/$100/$whatever so they think they got one over on you and you still get the amount you were aiming for.
-
yeah, i did pad it a little be he wanted it for $200 less than what I had it listed for.
