Regarding the tuners you ordered, my guess is that your intent is to drop in the new tuners using the existing screw holes. But Schallers come with various tab locations for the screws on the back of the headstock. Do you have pix of the replacement tuners?

My wait is seeming much longer now. At least Ms. Lora ordered my case!
I'll be brutally honest. Although I've only previously owned one acoustic 18" in a Super Eagle. I expect it will have a completely different voice from an electric with a humbucker. I'll be installing a '1100 floater.

Don't tell them about Heritage either!

I'll shoot some natural light shots tomorrow. Yes, I chose the depth after sampling a Guild X700, and discovering how deep they were. A hair under 4" depth was my target as I desired a guitar I'd be inclined to play acoustically almost exclusively. My incentive was to create an archtop nearly the size of a flattop. Why? Curiosity, and I like big guitars.

    OK, thanks for the picture.
The screw holes on the 14:1 mini-M6 tuners you ordered will not match the screw holes on your guitar, which are slightly offset. Not a problem because Schaller does make a version of the M-6 with an offset tab that pretty much exactly matches the Wilkinson tuners (perfectly good tuners probably made by Jin Ho in Korea).

However, Schaller does not offer these for sale to the public. They are only sold to manufacturers. Again, not a problem if you know someone who is connected to a guitar-building company that uses those tuners and do a straight-up trade for a set with the correct tab placement.

Like these, but in whatever finish style you wanted to use:

Thanks HT! No, I didn't order the mini's. I ordered the 12:1 M6 in Ebony.

Here's what I ordered. These are stock on the Eastman 910 if I'm not mistaken. If I have to modify the hole it's no biggie. It's a players guitar!

Schaller M6, gold, ebony buttons, 12:1 ratio

So no wonder I had such a hard time finding them...not for sale to public? These the Schaller M6 Ebony you're referring to?

Schaller M6, gold, ebony buttons, 12:1 ratio

    Thank goodness for Google

Same problem. The tab placement on the 12:1 Schaller M-6 full-sized tuners is different from that on the offset tab placement on the Wilkinson tuners. The holes are in a different spot. The only tuners that Schaller makes that match the hole placement of the Jun Ho tuners (as well as matching Gotoh offset tabs, btw) are the ones in the picture I posted. Hofner used gold-plated/ebony versions of these on the Chancellor, New President, Jazzica and Verythin JS.

It's your guitar and you can do with it as you wish, but I'd install a set of the Schallers that fit the existing holes and I would not drill an extra set of holes into a new instrument.

I figured I'd post this publicly instead of via PM because this issue comes up for anyone considering retro-fitting Schaller tuners. Schaller does make various other styles of tuners as well (including a shameless but excellent Grover Rotomatic knockoff), and I do like their products, but the company is …German. Meaning they think like ...Germans.

Thanks for the heads up Stephen! Is the Ebony button an option or an easy swap?

Me and my bad eyes. It's clear to me now that the mount on the M6 I ordered is nearly vertical and not angled as in the photo...duh. Thanks for the assist Stephen, and for catching my error! The learning and teaching curve on this build continues.

At some point we will need a definitive answer...yes...or...no...do we buy from Mr. Wu...or not.

You, sir are an expert on archtops...

    So

    What

    You?!?!?!?!?!?!

Wood binding is VERY sexy, and with wood you don't need to worry about binding rot, like some American arch tops (Ibanez too), but then again with a ebony guard you don't have outgassing guards...

So this morning I get an email from Ms. Lora that she had read my comment about regretting the wood binding and asked if I wanted to change the order. Try getting that level of service from ANY other company! I told her that I'd stick with the wood, but would think about plastic on my next order.

Assuming that this works out as well as I expect, and I think that's a safe assumption given what I've seen here, I'm already planning my next one. I'm thinking that I'll have Mr. Wu in a constant build cycle from here on out.

"Wu Hu" in Chinese means "Five Bats" and in a Chinese pun (because the Chinese are pretty punny) it also means "five blessings" or "five happinesses" which in the Confucian tradition are longevity, good health, riches, a love of virtue, and a natural/peaceful passing. The Chinese character in the middle is generally a stylised version of one of those (usually either longevity or prosperity).

The symbology of the five bats surrounding a lucky character is considered quite auspicious, and one sees the design on porcelain, craft of all sorts, on posters, calendars, etc. There is usually red associated with it because red is the most auspicious color (google "five bats" and check out the images - you'll see a lot!)

I had coincidentally been corresponding briefly with Ms Lora Yu and had already decided to try to figure out how to get a headstock MOP inlay with the five bats as a reference to both Mr Wu, the five blessings, and an auspicious guitar. I have not figured out my pattern yet but I'm working on it...

2b~ Congratulations on receiving your dream guitar! I'm sure it is all that you hoped it would '2be'.

Can't wait to hear your tone/playability review.

That is the gold standard in packing. I'm very impressed.

The guitar is beautiful. The pickup choice is fabulous.

I like the 22 frets, too. There are those who argue that this will shift the pickup to close to the bridge. To them I say, you will always find something to bitch about. The frequency nodes shift location depending on where you are fretting. If there is a little loss in low frequencies with a slight shift in pickup placement, adjust your amp or pluck your strings a little closer to the neck. It's a small price to pay to avoid reaching for a high D and finding nothing there.

Play the hell out of that thing, sir and enjoy it!

    Greg,

You the Man! Fine concept and excellent execution. I'm looking forward to a visit to see and hear (maybe play) 1st hand, although your pics, as usual, are as good as it gets. What a great journey to be on. Lovely.

    2b & Big,

Why couldn't you ship all top of the line USA parts ( Schaller tuners, USA pickup, Switchcraft pots & jack, etc ) to Mr.Wu prior to the build thus not having to do a redo besides the fret dress ? Shipping costs of light parts to China would most likely be cheaper than redo costs from a luthier. I take it you can't obtain these top of the line parts in China ? I just think it would be better to do it all top of the line from the get go then having to do a round 2.
BTW 2b that sunburst really floats my boat !

it's a common symbol seen in Chinese restaurants here. Just last week I observed the pattern repeated on the wall across from my table and I instinctively knew it had a meaning. Thanks Travis, the insightful one!

its being done, and has been done. I've read threads where some have shipped parts to Lora. Some have chosen not to install parts there and wait to install them here. Anything electric I'm choosing to do here as a matter of personal choice. Mainly because it has to be verified anyway, and up to code. And then there's that long flight here...anything can shift in transit. Swapping just tuners, or a tailpiece here is a wash, for what it would cost to ship them there I'll pay a luthier to install them here. I'm betting that eliminating tuners from an order doesn't save one $20.
