p.s.
not hearing much in the way of picking dynamics in galo's clips.

I never noticed how much he tweaks that volume knob. I usually have this stuff on in the background and am listening while looking at other things.
-
That's what I did and I really couldn't hear much in the way of dynamics change. With the kemper set to an overdriven tone, particularly if it's a vintagey overdrive or something like the dumble, there's a big difference when you back off on the volume control. I'm going to try tonight with the kemper vs. the axefx on a vintage marshall set to a JTM 45 sort of tone ala semi-distorted axis-bold-as-love and see how backing the volume down affects things. The axefx plexi tone is pretty good so that will be a good test. Of course, I'm assuming I have a well created profile for that amp with the kemper.

Jack: You've got me going like a yoyo. Interested in the Kemper, now the AxeFx... Then, researching the AxeFx I see they have the Ax8. For jazz and fusion, which gives a more amp like experience and jazz tones (AxeFx XL, Ax8 or Kemper) as opposed to heavy metal which is what the majority of AxeFx demos go after? I am currently using an acoustic image into a Buscarino cab, like the thought of having some fun with rock with the same rig. Also, are you using the Atomic CLR that I see on the AxeFx forum for a speaker? Thanks.
-
i am using a pair of Alto TS110A speakers. They are inexpensive. About $200 each. I don't think you need to spend the $$$ on the atomics IMO....
I just got an AX8. It's sure convenient to have the whole thing in a single pedal without having to worry about all kinds of connections.
It doesn't have the processing power of the axefx II so you can't do stuff like dual amps and dual cabs but I'm not sure I really need that stuff...
So I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I have a trial period on the ax8 so I could return it but I'm tempted to keep it and the kemper and sell the axefx II.
-
I'm about to pull the trigger on the AX8 and a pair of powered monitors. Probably the 1x12 XiTone wedges. I'm going to keep the AxeFx II. I'll keep it in the studio and closer to home.
-
Seems to me the ideal situation is the Kemper for the amps and the FX8 for the effects. (financial considerations aside). What say ye....
-
Jack, Thanks for the updated post. At one point, I had considered using the FX-8 in conjunction with the KPA but my musical desires have since veered off towards the nylon string side. I'd be interested to hear if it (to your ears) changes the "feel" or dynamics of the KPA. rob
-
yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I may keep the kemper and the ax8. I do like the clean fender jazz tone better out of the axefx / ax8 though. I think it's because the profile I have doesn't have very good speakers and it's a tad nasally. (i'm splitting hairs when I say this)

Jack: Ignorant question re Ax8 vs AxeFX: If the Ax8 cannot do 2 amps/cabs can you still run "stereo amps" on Ax8 if choose the same amp or is stereo not possible with the Ax8? Was hoping to use the fractal to get the stereo sound. How do you compare the ax8 vs the AxeFx?
-
yes, you can still run in stereo as the delays, reverbs, choruses and many other effects output a nice stereo width. What you cannot do is run two different amps in a single profile. On the axefx, it's got dual processors and enough power to run 2 fully parallel and different amp setups in a single profile, one going to each stereo side. So for example, if you wanted to do SRV's trick of running a super reverb and a vibroverb together, you could do that. Or you could double up and have a

You can't do that on ax8 because it only allows 1 amp and 1 cab per preset.
But you can run TS9->SuperReverb->4x10 Cab->Stereo-Reverb/Delay
So the main differences are
1) memory
2) dual CPUs
3) A few restrictions like 1 amp and/or 1 cab per preset
4) Axefx can be used as an audio "card" in your computer. Not so with AX8
-
Jack, you can create a profile of the clean tone you like on the AxeFx. You won't get the same effect though
-
What I love about the Axe Fx is you can control the supply Sag and tube or cathode bias and every imaginable characteristic of the amps setting. I'm sure if there's something that doesn't sit right IMMEDIATELY you can zero in on the specific controls. I don't know the Kemper, but it seems much easier, which I suspect is the attraction. I mean other than that it sounds great out of the gate. But if you're like me and are less interested in recreating museum replicas -- I mean that's not supposed to be a dig, but the concept of creating your own amp is just too exciting for me. I couldn't care less if it sounds dead on a Dumble or not. I'm sure I can MAKE it sound like my PERCEPTION of what I think a Dumble sounds like TO ME given all the parameters.
As a humble audio engineer who is used to tweaking, though sometimes frustrated by it, I like the absolute control of the Fractal.Last edited by henryrobinett; 02-12-2016 at 02:29 AM.

It's just amp substitution -- we play jazz, right? ;-)

* It would be totally cool to profile AmpFX with the Kemper!

You guys have totally missed the point. The difference between the axefx and the kemper is that the kemper captures a single snapshot of a very specific set of tone control and volume settings. Even if you profiled the axefx, all you'd have to do is twist a few knobs a few degrees and the axefx would sound totally different while the kemper would sound like you're adjusting the eq on your stereo system of the original playback.

Like a fender twin? But want to hear what it sounds like with EL84s instead of 6L6s? Switch them.
Want it running in class A? Switch it.
Want to run it with with an EV12L in a 1x12? switch it.
Want to hear it through a 4x12 cab? Switch it.
Want to run EL84s at 500v? Switch it.
Want to switch to EL34 but in class A and at 300v? Switch it.
There's an almost infinite way to vary each amp. You can literally build every part of the amp from a composite of parts. How can you possibly profile that? Kemper doesn't have enough memory...Last edited by jzucker; 02-13-2016 at 08:09 AM.

...but can the AxeFX look look like a funky green breadbox from my Mom's 1970's kitchen?
Exactly, Kemper for the win ;-)
Just joking Jack, I have zero experience with either... which is why you should totally trade me the Kemper for my Jonathan Rose tele!!
Save me from buying the new '68 Vibrolux Reverb.

The kemper was sold a few days ago, sorry! But seriously, the kemper is a great profiler. I loved the dumble amp on it.

I do think I'll rack my MPX1 with it though. For me this is really amp heaven. I haven't had a chance to track or gig with it yet.

These were the clean profiles. The vibroverb was what I used.

Hey Jack, did you get your AX8 used or did you get on the list? I just signed up for the list and am curious to how long you had to wait if you went that rout.
-
With this thread being a bit older than a year, and updates that have occurred since, if anyone can share some of their thoughts on this. Was thinking of getting the axe fx or kemper. Anyone?
