Great thread!...I just started running a new setup and need a little advice.
    Gibson ES 165 Herb Ellis
    D'Addario XL Chromes Flatwound .12-.52
    Vox Pathfinder 15SMR408
i am going for a real clean warm tone. I flip back and forth between finger style and using a Dunlop JazzIII pick. The Gain Tremelo and Reverb on this head are great for song of the songs I write, but I am researching pedals..Most specifically compressors. Naturally the the Joe Meek is FloorQ is top of the list, but it is rather dear in price and I am wondering if any of you lads (or ladies) have experiance with anything such as the products from Boss or MXR (or any other manufacturers). Also, if you got any insight into these older Vox Amps I would love to hear about them.. I am spending a lot of time(happily, mind you) tweaking my tone.

I'm not a fan of compression as a guitar effect for jazz. Compression is for recording, and added after the fact if things need a little smoothing out. Just my two cents.

I am now using an inexpensive Jay Turser Les Paul Studio copy and a 1980's Roland Cube 60 (the orange one). I set the amp's EQ pretty flat and roll down the treble on my tone controls. Since I also play in a 4 piece blues band (guitar, piano, bass, drums) I use Ernie Ball roundwound 11-48 gauge Slinky's. I would eventually like to get an archtop or telecaster style guitar with rosewood fret board and a humbucker for a neck pickup like Ed Bickert. I am just a newbie to jazz guitar but want to learn. I am so glad I found this site.

There have been a bunch of changes on my end, so here is the update:

Guitars: Collings I-35 Deluxe; Soloway Single !5, Sadowsky Jimmy Bruno, and Gibson ES-175.

Amps: Headstrong Lil' King in a Lil' King S Cab. Acoustic Image Clarus + and Raezers' Edge Stealth 12 ER

Settings: Everything at 12 on the amps.

Strings: TI Swing 10s for the Collings, TI Swing 11s for the Sadowsky & Gibson, Sadowsky Nickel 10s for the Soloway.

Pickups: Lollar Imperials in the Collings; Stock in the Sadowsky, 57 Classics in the 175, and I forget what is in the Soloway.

Pedals: Hermida Reverb. Maxon Delay AD-999.

Picks: Fingerstyle primarily, but when I do, I use a Wegen Gypsy Jazz

    Cords: Whirlwind or Planet Waves

    Tuner: Planetwaves headstock. Polytune Pedal.

Practice Recorder: Zoom H4N. Wonderful device. Great for practice.
