A total "mancave" dream !!! Big screen TV, 2 DA's, and plenty of wine.

Update, I tried a different sponge today.
when I woke up this morning, the cabinet was maintaining 43-44%. I put a new sponge in and added warm water to the container. The humidistat gradually rose to 52% and has been hold steady between 51-52% for the past 3 hours.

Guys, seriously, I am not updating you on this cabinet situation just to keep my post alive. I am doing it because I think this is the best arrangement possible and I want to share it with my friends. It is incredible to me that this is working so well. Unreal.

Hard to keep your eyes on the tv though. I'd rather watch the DA's. Right on brother !

    Hi guys,
The display case idea is working out great.
I ditched sponge in the container for a more eye friendly, automated method.
I bought a Hydra Cigar humidifier. I bought the small version, model# HYDRA-SM. I really like it. It's very compact, dead quiet and it has a humidistat built in that turns the fan on and off and keeps my babies perfectly humidified. I set it to 48.5 degrees. The unit doesn't struggle at all. It's about 8 degrees outside, and heats been blasting all day. It has an alarm that beeps when you need to add water. The red led lights up the case in the dark. Looks cool, works great, neat, tidy, what else can you ask for? The case was $190. The humidifier $76. The results? A happy Excel.

She sure is one beautiful work of art in that case JD! I agree with Vinny, that's one tv show stopper right there!

You're last posted Acurite humidity reading is what's normal in my home near Seattle - But without any humidifier. Weird huh?

That's the way a fine instrument should be cared for - pampered, protected, and played. You're setting a good example, Joe. Keep up the good work!

C74, thanks for saying that because most people (in particular, the ones I live with..) think I am nuts.
    Neatomic,
I had my neighbor over and as he as leaving he left a dollar on my end table.. It's pretty funny.

Joe, as a caretaker of what must be considered a national treasure, you are doing the right thing. You are taking pains to conserve and maintain a piece of cultural significance. By playing it at the very high level that you do, recording and sharing with the world, you are maintaining the life of the instrument itself and upholding the well-deserved reputation of John D'Angelico, Modern Master. Kudos, Sir, kudos!

You may well be, like me, a little crazy (crazy about guitars!). I don't miss my mind that much.

    Great post c74.
Thats exactly what I feel like I'm doing.
I really love this Hydra humidifier. It has settled my nerves big time. It's a great device. The fan circulates the air inside the cabinet. I never realized cigars need to be humidified to 70.8%. And this device handles the job very well. 48.5% for the DA is nothing!

it's estimated d'angelico made roughly 1164 guitars..the number of known stradivarius violins from centuries ago is presently around 650!!...known works by js bach around 1000...shakespeare wrote less than 200 plays and sonnets!!

joe d, you are caretaking a treasure..one day that guitar will be in a museum...so carry on

    again..love the humidor bit..great idea

    cheers

Neatomic, I asked this some time ago. Do you have any idea how many original DA's have survived? Does anyone know?

don't know joe d, but wouldnt be surprised if there are now 2000!!..unfortunately, art begets forgery...

in trying to find an answer (i didn't), i did find that there are less than 300 strombergs in existence..stromberg was probably d'angelico's closest parallel...redsox vs yanks...these wooden ships are rare

    cheers

But if you wanted to keep them in cases AND look at them, those cases would be one way to do it. The other way to do it would be to have put a combination humidifier and air purifier (Sharp and Panasonic make them I am pretty sure) in the room to humidity-control it, and leave them on the wall. I'd run a fan in the room too to circulate the air. The goal is to keep air moving (fan), keep it clean so dust/grime from the air does not settle (air purifier) and keep the air humid (humidifier). The fan runs $50 tops. The humifidifer/purifier which can set to be keep humidity at X% is usually $200-300 from Amazon.
Sharp and Panasonic is good. But in Amazon I find many better air purifiers. I would suggest using a Levoit or Honeywell
