So, after playing a Gibson L5 CT a month or so ago at Artisan Guitars I have been doing a little surfing on pricing, etc in the event I somehow manage to come up with a ton of cash. In today's few minutes of surfing while I came across this gorgeous Gibson L5 CT Custom with a fantastic light burst and one pickup ala Wes Montgomery.

I dig thin bodied archtops and this one is fantastic!

Whoa! Like "Oklahoma City" that's "mighty pretty". Thank goodness it's already sold. I'll be able to sleep tonight.

Geez! Abalone-looking inlays, too. What a great looking L5.

That was sold many years ago. I called John about 10 minutes too late to buy it.

Hey Danny, did John say how much it sold for?

I knew it was sold and stated such in my original post. I did originally post this thread in the For Sale section on accident and had Mark move it... Oops

    That is a spectacular guitar.

I know you said it was sold, just pointing out it was quite a long time past.

I checked my emails and found that John said he had sold it in one day.

Not surprised. Possibly the only one of its kind. I had never before seen or heard of a L5CT with one pickup.

Gibson has built a number of single pickup L-5CTs--I have one myself, which is one of the few labeled as a WesMo, and I've seen several more. It's the left front:

My memory has gotten pretty creaky lately; can't even remember what we had for breakfast yesterday, and we have the same thing every day except Sunday. Even so, I never forget a guitar. That beautiful L-5CT was sold by John in Nov, 2006 (my guitar memory is not that good--I looked up the emails), but I ran across it in a thread in TPG in 2009 (looked up that date too) and offered to buy it. The poster had not bought it from John, but from another site in 2008. He's still active on TPG, although the photos are missing in the thread, but I'm probably not going to buy another 17" guitar, so I haven't asked again if he'd sell it.

Love the iced-tea finish. This is my Great White Whale:

I've been waiting for it to pop up on the used market but so far, to no avail.

I think I will dream of that guitar tonight .....

My project for the next few years is to see if I can save enough money up to buy a used super 400

We'll see if it is even possible

Artisan had a 20% off "inventory sale" on all new instruments a few days ago.

I took a look, nothing jumped at me. They have a sweet Collings Eastside but not what I am wanting now. The 20% is for new in-stock. Good deals if you're wanting a new Collings!

I joined this forum just to say that I want the guitar in the OP!

    What a beautiful instrument.

Now I have to go do some research to find how often these instruments surface on the market.

As many of you know, Gibson made 44 L5CTs (the George Gobel model) from 1958-1962; three of them had PAFs. See 1959 Gibson L5-CT George Gobel Model | Chad Fitzpatrick Guitar Restorations. I think the modern ones are a thicker top carve, like a WesMo.

I played a Gobel in the early 90s at McKenzie River Music in Eugene, and recall being stunned by its acoustic sound and playability. I can't remember if it had a pickup. Around the same time (pre-Internet) one of the advertisers in Vintage Guitar ran an ad for one for months, describing it as a "Goebels" (ouch!).

    Hey Danny:
Is there another way to identify this specific model besides L-5CT? Something that denotes the fact that it has just one pickup?

I would love to play one of these!
