Amazing. Gibson misjudged the market. At least they are nimble enough to change back.
-
Smart move.
-
Good news for me. I just got a job at a meat packing plant, with which I hope to fund a proper Gibson archtop
-
Take a bit more than that to change my opinion.
-
Back to basics. Good move.
I just feel sorry for the poor bastards that invested in 2015's.

EXACTLY. Unless it's what they really wanted.

And bring back the JS or LeGrand model for our man JD. I guess that pile of junk pressed spruce top archtop for $6200 flew like a elephant too. Well at lest I can hammer Henry J again without being bit by our dearly missed great white shark.

Definitely a step in the right direction from Gibson
-
course correction due to a buying public pushback or did Gibson realize their market overreach?

How smart do you have to be to figure out that a large contingent (majority?) of your customers want replicas of '57 - '60 LP's? Pull out the blueprints, tool up the factory and replicate that design with the wood you have in hand now. Is it really a such monumental task to replicate what was done in your own factory 50+ years ago? We're not Frankenstiening Amati and Stradavarious back from their graves, we're talking about replicating (which is precisely what FACTORIES do) what was done in a factory 55 years ago.
Business model: Coke, followed by New Coke, but people hate New Coke so they don't buy it, genius steps in and decides to make original Coke again because that's what the majority of customers want.

So there is some pressure to come down on some of these models as well ..... from my discussions with my local store many of these were forced on the stores by Gibson to maintain their dealership privileges.
archtops tend to linger in the stores even in the best of times
so we'll see
Myself .... I'm one of those mid age professionals with a little extra cash now and then ....
Instead of splurging on a Harley or a Corvette or other mid life crises toys ... I picked up an L5CES and an L5WES and they are blast
I'd love to pick up one of the L5 Premiers with a floater, but I'm also eyeing some older Super 400s .... or even a Super Eagle
We'll see if I can get my savings up where it needs to be or if I can sell some guitars

Forbes interviewed Henry J. about his $40M investment in self-tuning and other tech upgrades to the Gibson product line.
It's an interesting read, especially in view of the most recent announcement.

2015 has been a bad year for one of my guitar playing pals. He developed a bad heart...and...he bought a Les Paul with those crazy robot tuners.
Heart is doing better, but the Les Paul still has those robot tuners.

The Legrand is alive and well. Music Zoo usually has at least one online. I bought a beaut last May.
Like this bad boy.

So Gibson is going to eat 20-25% revenue, contracts from suppliers, stock, and retooling? It must be nice to be able to do that these days. Auto-tuners were about the sketchiest thing I have seen in years.

Great one, Greentone, Yep.. Like my man Melvin Franklin said, "Beauties only skin deep, yeah yeah yeah, and You know that..."

FF, That gold hardware is nice. I might change over the hardware from black to Gold on my Heritage Johnny Smith. I wonder if that will affect the tone? Just kidding.

i have 2 of them. they are superb guitars IMO.

Document yourself about Gibson's history, then you'll hopefully understand why the otherwise simple task you're asking is simply not possible.
