For me it is the albums 7th Ave. Stroll and True Blue by Mark Whitfield. I bet my bottom dollar he is playing through a Twin Reverb. I love GB's tone on Giblet Gravy too.

What's your favorite guitar tone albums gents ? Yes Django & JoySpring by JP way up there too.

Gosh, there's many great sounds I can think of...

Herb Ellis on 'Ellis in Wonderland'- classic P-90 ES175 sounds, and fantastic playing.
Billy Bean- any of those trio recordings.
Django Reinhardt's electric sound, particularly on the recording of "Honeysuckle Rose" with the Duke Ellington Orchestra.
Charlie Christian.... all of his recordings.
Oscar Moore.... all those Nat King Cole Trio recordings are fantastic
Bireli Lagrene... I like the sound he gets from his L-5, kind of George Benson-ish, but in his own way...crazy chops too.
Tal Farlow... The Classic Guitar of Tal Farlow is a great example, I also love the early recordings with Artie Shaw, and those with the Red Norvo Trio.
    Kenny Burrell on Midnight blue...

on a side note, one of my favourite tones, although not jazz at all is Albert King's earlier recordings (60s/70's). That guy had a huge tone.

Martin Taylor playing a 1939 Gibson Super 400P on "Over the Rainbow" and a 1989 D'Aquisto New Yorker on "My Romance" on Tone Poems II with David Grisman, Acoustic Disc, 1995. Those are my two favorite acoustic archtop tones of all time.

For electric: Herb Ellis and Joe Pass each playing Gibson ES-175 guitars on "Love for Sale," on the album Two for the Road, Pablo Records, 1974. ...or...anything by Grant Green on Blue Note
