I'm looking for a speaker to use in a 12"open backed cabinet for clear, full jazz tones. The amp is a Traynor 2x6V6 Darkhorse.
I currently have a 12" Private Jack which is a good rock speaker but I think it emphasizes some of the wrong frequencies.
What do you people look for in fequency responses? Flat? A slight boost in 2-3khz? I notice a lot of rock speakers drop way off around 1500hz but then jump up 10 db at 2500 hz

most of the emi and celest guitar speakers have thin cones which distort when playing loud. I've been playing through a celestion classic lead 80 which is "ok", not great but probably better than most of the emi "guitar" speakers for jazz.
I've heard good things about this speaker. http://wgs4.com/12-et90-100-watts
Never tried it but liked the 65 watt version.
IMO, what you want to look for is a freq response relatively flat at it's rated sensitivity level out to about 4.5k or so. Any lower and it'll sound dark. (Which may or may not be what you're looking for).
One of the emi pro speakers I've used is the Delta 12A. It's got a high mid peak though which can sound bright for overdrive but it's a great clean speaker and is the one that Raezer's Edge and several other jazz cabinets use. I think it works best in a closed, ported cab though.

I'll speak up for the WGS ET90 (100 watts 8ohm) Great sounding speaker, fat ,clear, great clean and distorted. Only complaint is not super light weight like a Neo. But it's a great happy medium between high power neo 12's and EV's.
I have a Jensen Tornado 12 (100 watt Neo 8 ohm) as well. I like it fine, but probably better in a closed back cab. I tend to use open back 1x12" combos Mesa/Boogie Nomad 55 & 100, and a Quilter Aviator 1x12" as well lately.
I have yet to replace the Celestion Lead 80 in my Quilter. But I'm leaning towards replacing it w/ another WGS ET90.
Hope any of this helps your search!

You haven't really laid out your criteria for us to offer meaningful suggestions. For example, is weight an issue? Is cost an issue?

Very happy with an Eminence Cannabis Rex in a Hot Rod Deluxe.......great tone with an eS-175.

You've got to spend quite a lot of time comparing speakers side by side, using a logical procedure, a wide variety of speakers to really know the difference in tone.
-
Actually the only thing you need to do is like the one you bought. But there in, lies the entire problem!

I would now put it in a ported 1x12 cab.
Weight is not an issue.

if weight isn't an issue, jbl d120, ev12L, ev force 12

These are the only EV guitar speakers currently available new:

New they are way out of the OP's price point.

Eminence now produce an "EV - like" 12" speaker - there's a thread on it from Jorge- and Eighteen Sound in Italy produce some similarly EV-like units. I have been using an eighteen 12W500 recently, and like it. One advantage is that it weighs 10lb, not 15lb +. 99.5 db, drops off at 5k. Around £100 UK.

I run a pair of Altec 417B speakers in a Fender 2X12 cabinet. The Altec's can be had for a good price if you look around, I got a good used pair for $150.00. They are very clean and clear sounding and not as dark as the pair of English Celestion greenbacks in another Fender cabinet I use.
Thanks John

which speaker is that? Commonwealth? I thought that was a JBL clone?

Eminence posts the frequency responses of their speakers, which is cool, except I don't know how to read them! Is flat response better than a mid-freq bump? For a typical, clean, jazz amp, what should the range of the speaker be, especially the high end? There seems to be significant differences in where speakers cut off in the high end.

For me, the Altec 417s ( H's and B's) are the best I have ever found; alnico, about 14 lb, 100db, not harsh, very balanced. Snag with old Altecs is that the surrounds can go, and the spring mounting terminals lose effectiveness.

thanks. I looked at the freq response chart for an EV12L and it's extremely similar! However, it weighs 16.3lbs

99.5 db, but loud enough for me. Ideally should go to 5.5k, but still not bad.

I am actually going to be A/Bing two different 12" speakers in my tube amp over the next two-weeks. One of the speakers has a two-week money back policy so no procrastinating here.
