Ask Jim Soloway about his Cremona. The Cremona is more harmonically vibrant than an ES175. They're promoted as being "carved" maple tops. Who knows...all I know is they're probably the best bang for the buck beneath $4k...ridiculously musical without a hint of "brightness."

No offense but that sounds dull and lifeless to me and i'm not interested in a carved top, 17" guitar with a single pickup. I already have a carved spruce top 17" guitar with 25.5" scale.

I'm more interested in early jim hall / metheny tone and something with a smaller scale.

    Jack,

Have you ever played a fender d'aquisto? some of the demos i've heard sound bright, but this one is better.

Yes, I owned a d'aquisto back in the day. The pickups were awful and couldn't be replaced because they were an odd shape.

Jabberwocky - I've always wanted an L4 CES but never found one at the right price. At this point, since i'm going to keep my Heritage Eagle, I would prefer to add a darker sounding plywood guitar like a 175 or kessel to my arsenal as opposed to another spruce top maple neck guitar.

My bad. I saw D'Q Jazzline and thought D'Q New Yorker, assuming it was a 17" archtop you had bought...You bought and are after a 16"...I get it now...good luck finding your bliss man.

For anyone considering a D'Q Jazzline, just as a suggestion, it could be emphasized that another's experience is likely to be completely different from yours, for no 2 guitars, or individuals wants, are alike.

Another individual might find the D'Q Jazzline is the creme de la creme.

unfortunately, the '74 175 I got today is a total dud. Guitar Center was nice enough to ship it with a guitar center pick rattling around inside of it.

Guess I'm sticking with the heritage.

Oof. Good to know about Victor Litz. They're constantly running ads in the DC area and occasionally there's something interesting-looking. I'll know better & continue to avoid them.

i wouldn't avoid them for this situation. They were very good to me during the evaluation and return period. I think they might have just gotten caught up in the holiday season rush and didn't examine the instrument closely prior to shipping.

And the '74 175 thing was a blessing in disguise. Made me realize how special my Heritage Eagle is...

Jack, do you ever get any grief returning the guitars? At a music shop, you could just play a bunch off the rack. Now that those have been largely replaced with Internet shopping, it must be more standard practice to buy/try/return. Is that the case?

Which characteristics did you expect from the D'Aquisto? Where did you find the most trouble spots?

i don't get any grief because I always ask for an evaluation period before agreeing to buy. Guitar Center and Victor Litz gave me 7 days. Unfortunately, around cleveland, the only guitars you can try off the rack are cheap epiphones and pointy things.

What I was hoping for with the daquisto was a fairly live top and a 175ish tone with a bit more clarity due to the maple neck. Instead, this guitar was fairly dead sounding and the P90 pickup enhanced the wrong part of the freq spectrum given the all maple construction. Maybe with the stock pickup it would have sounded great? Who knows? But I didn't want to mess with it. They were willing to give me a few bucks to have the pickup replaced but acoustically, it wasn't doing anything for me so I didn't want to mess with it.
