    Pretty Sorrento !

Do you remplace the bridge or was it already a "non-floating" one ?

That's how it came and that's apparently how Epi made all of them when they ran this model for a while back in the 90's.

Yes pretty Sorrento ! Much prettier than the today reissue ! Love the burst ! It looks like an Heritage H525, but with an "€" on the pickguard, or a good old ES-125-TDC !

Funny you answered today, because I went back to the store this afternoon : I just wanted to double check my opinion, and see (hear ?) what the guitar would sound with another amp.

So, today was the MesaBoogie Express 5:25+ on clean channel (this store is not really "clean jazz" oriented, but it's better than Marshall for in a jazz context)

Results were much better (to my ears), so I now understand that the sound from this guitar can suit some folks in the jazz area. But, this new test didn't change my previous opinion, even if it has much sweetened.
The mini-humbuckers are not my favourites !

Yours must sound great with the P90's !

Yea it's a nice color. It's more of a wine sunburst than a tobacco sunburst. The P90 sound is a nice change from the humbucker sound. I have no idea whether these are good P90s or lousy P90s but I like the sound well enough. Quite a variety of sound : clean and mellow to George Thorogood.

That Sorento looks like an ES-125, the mustard color? I'd have to see that in person :-) The natural looks better, and it has other color options and P90's in the UK?

    Hi,

the "new" ones (1962 reed-) are all with mini-hums. Some dislike it (too bright), i found it interesting but, frankly, I've play with the bridge pup for 3 minutes... The neck-one is perfect for me, not too flat nor dark.
The most interesting thing is the finish and set-up out of the box, some at Memphis Custom Shop could take lessons (a bad experience with a Gib 339 irritate me a lot, when you pay 2000€, you are waiting for a guitar with decent binding, pups levels, frets,etc... I let the guitar in the shop that order it for me).
If I can find one with P90, I'll have a test, for sure.

    Sorry for my poor english.

hello again & happy new year!

so i bought a natural sorrento from the GC. from the store it needed a serious setup. the nut was cut way too high. i picked up my guitar "perfectly" setup from my local preferred guitar tech yesterday. it now plays and feels great! i have it strung with daddario pure nickel 12s. they seem a little too tight for this guitar though, maybe due to the shorter scale then my other guitars? i may try 11s.

however, the guitar tech showed me how the neck is at an angle a little too shallow/parallel to the body and that if the guitar body and/or neck should shift and or "collapse" any in the future that the bridge and the nut are already as low as they will go, and the action will not be able to be lowered again.

i wonder if anybody can chime in regarding how their sorrento is setup and how the bridge and action are set? i wonder if maybe this is unique to my sorrento? should i try to replace it for another?

    thanks.

Ha. I replied on TGP too:

Mine has pretty low action with room to go lower. Can you post a pic of the bridge? It is possible the neck angle is too low... no matter how automated the process is, guitars are still handmade. Did the tech confirm the neck is not twisted and you have proper neck relief set?

Here are some pics. I've updated on TGP as well. According to the tech, the neck is clean.

Hard to tell, but should be fine. You could always do a wood bridge and sand down the bottom of the saddle piece too...we're talking millimeters here...

Top looks thick. Probably great for feedback control...i bet that guitar has the "thunk."

I'd agree with your tech that the neck angle is too low, especially if you have the option to return. I asked about photos because if you had a thicker bridge base, you could sand it down but it's pretty thin already. A neck reset on a poly-coated guitar is going to be a mess.

    Here is mine:

thanks spiral. yours definitely looks better. yeah, the base looks as though it's already been sanded as low as it would go. i thought about going all rosewood but wanted to get some opinions first.

yes, she thunks! great sound. the minis are a great match for this guitar.

however, i think i'll return this one and try my luck on another. thanks for the input gentlemen!

Difficult to tell from the photos, but here's another one for comparison:

thanks tiagpop. it looks like you have a "better" angle on yours as well. it looks like your bridge base has been sanded as well. what kind of bridge did you put on? is it metal or is that a result of the photo?

The bridge base wasn't sanded at all, it's stock.

The stock bridge however was upgraded to a Stainless Steel Compton: Stainless Custom Bridge....Giving a good clean tone and sustain for Rock and Rockabilly. | Compton Compensated Custom Bridges.

Highly recommended for more sustain and volume (and less rattling). It also matches the radius of your fretboard, allowing for a much smoother action across the the string arch.

    Quick update:
Sorrento 2 has been setup and is everything I had hoped number one would be.

    New nut
    New rosewood bridge
    New rosewood knobs
    Bigsby to follow

Not jazz, but here is a Sorrento with the Galli Black Nylon tape wound strings, mostly neck, tone and volume on 10:

I just found this thread whilst looking for another Epi Sorrento. I have been playing jazz guitar for 30+ years and I've been through too many expensive guitars. I bought one of these because I like the thin 175 idea and £400 isn't a big gamble. My one plays just perfectly after a couple of minor adjustments and new strings. It's the most comfortable guitar I have ever played including thinline teles or 335s. I love the neck, for me the best ever! I personally like the tone of these minis. Good definition but still warm on the neck pu. I have played some duff mini pu's in the past but these are gigable. I have thought about removing the neck pu and having a Johnny Smith type attached to the end of the fret board but I can't justify it really. For ANY money this is a good instrument. The woods and finish are not the best and the headstock is well joined as a scarf joint but that's not the point. The sweet tone and light weight with a fine neck shape works well for me. Acoustically it lacks bass but the mids and highs are pretty. Plugged in you can get a real jazz tone perhaps in the Johnny Smith vein as opposed to the Joe Pass sound. Well I guess the J.S. pick up is similar to a mini humbucker or even the same maybe? A very cheap mod would be to have the neck pu of your choice then you have a 175t for peanuts.

I just picked one of these up. Beautiful instrument. Curious if a Frequensator tail piece would mount on it? It's a piece of hardware that has always gotten me interested. I'm not set on it but thought I'd ask the question just to see. Seen all sorts of opinions about them; love'em, hate'em, ugly, work of art, etc. I'm more interested in will it fit.

They probably would, as they used to be installed on the Epi Riviera, another thin archtop guitar.
