You're reading my mind, wintermoon. I have already thought to shave down the bottom of the bridge saddle, because it's just too close already to mess with the neck (which is not loose at all). There's no gouging on the board; it's actually in excellent shape. By planing I meant correcting any twists or irregularities between the treble and bass sides. He needed to do that with my '72 L-5C and made it play great.
Regardless I won't do anything else until the guitar gets looked at.
