I'm a bit of a Tele nut. I have three Nocasters and a G&L ASAT Classic. I gotta tell you, the ASAT Classic is right there in build quality. The Nocasters have a more raw sound, with a little more bite if that makes any sense. They excel with just a bit of power amp dirt for a rough and tumble traditional country sound. The ASAT Classic is a lot more even up and down the fret board and has a beautiful sustain, closer to the Bill Frissell sound played clean. It has a flatter fret board radius with big frets stock and has a linear-taper pot which makes it easier to obtain micro-adjustments. It is a beautiful instrument for jazz right out of the box. My vote would be for a stock ASAT Classic or Bluesboy.

I'd get detaily, but I'd just design a G&L Bluesboy.

With a neck HB and trapeze tailpiece, I'd say Steve Morse already designed a jazz tele.

l am making my own EVH Wolfgang body style. The earlier version bodies of the EVH are shaped like a Tele. l got the body from the summer sale from the good folks at Guitarmill.com. l plan on capping it with a spalted maple from Stewmac. l would like to have it be a carved top,, chambered body. Add a Warmoth boat shaped neck. Natural back finish. NO Poly! For pickups, either Lollar Charlie Christian neck, Joe Barden Danny Gatton rear pickup. L am also looking into getting a Barden humbucker to split the neck coil. Add Killer Guitar Components for the best parts! l may try and figure out how to do a Brent Mason type of pickup set up. With a middle pick up. l mostly want the guitar to be tonally versatile like my custom Warmoth Strat that l built. lt has a three way switch, but l have dual pot for volume where the middle pickup has a separate control. First l had the middle on the bottom knob, then l switch the wires to put it on top knob. But decided that l like it on the bottom for easier blending in. When the three way switch is in the middle position, the neck and bridge are on together. Then if l chose l can blend in the reversed middle pickup to have one big humbucker sound!. Tone controls, this where my secret weapon is. Two tone controls works on all pickups. l have a Fender TBX in the rear position and a Dan Torres Super Midrange in the middle position. With these combinations l can get quite a variety of tonal pallettes. Including wah tones. Add my Memphis Roto Phase pedal and l can really get some wah happening, out of phase wah, in phase sounds, out of phase sounds. What ever!
l have wired this Strat style guitar every way a strat can be wired and settled on this way to wire it. No l customized the TBX and the Super Midrange. l changed the resistor in the TBX and changed the capacitors in both l think. Also have a teble bleed for the dual volume controls. So this "dream guitar" is going to be a bit different. l have an idea to camouflage the middle pickup on the new guitar. Anyway, l a into something really different that l will create. l see a lot of other guys and gals create a really special instrument ala Brian May.. Right now l have the body, which l got from Guitarmill for $80 ! tt's alder, which what my strat is and l love the tone of this wood along with mahogany. What ever l come up with, this will be my "Dream Guitar". l would love to be able to buy one of the many great boutique guitars out there. But in the end l have to be the one to create the vision of what l want. l am researching ideas from many sources, one being the Unofficial Warmoth site which is a great forum for all things custom guitars!

These look great. I didn't know about them. They could almost cause me a GAS attack... I would prefer a 24.75" scale, but to me, the real deal breaker is the nut width at only 1-5/8"...

I just bought a semi-hollow version (G&L Bluesboy) recently and I like it. I agree with Eddie on scale length but I can live with it.

Fortunately the narrow neck works for me and I like the Rosewood board. This is the cheaper Tribute series but the quality is much better than I expected and I snagged it dirt cheap. Still, I plan to order a Stewmac wiring kit. The pickup is OK but may be a little hot for my taste. I'll use it for awhile and see if it grows on me. I can always swap it out later for an old Guild 'bucker I have.

No, it's not a REAL Tele... it's not even a Fender, but it's Tele-ish, easily replaceable and way fun to play.

G&L offers neck options. 1 11/16" and 1 3/4" are both available on the USA instruments.

Already done and available through the Fender Custom Shop, complete with carved spruce top, carved maple back, and so forth:

If one wanted to go "classic jazz", I suppose one could specify alternative hardware:
    - 1 x neck humbucking pickup
    - wooden bridge
    - suitable trapeze tailpiece
    - sunburst finish
    - etceteras
Unless one actually prefers the Gertsch dress:

At Custom Shop prices! In my imagination, this new model is pegged at MIM prices, so that they can sell plenty of them.

Yes, but their default neck size is 1 5/8", so that's what you're likely to find used, and it's the size they use for their Made-In-Indonesia Tribute line. I wish G&L bumped their default size up to 1 11/16".

I'm having an ASAT made with a 1 3/4" neck ("profile #4") and they actually called me up, via the music store, to double check that I really wanted a neck that wide.

In fact, at first I dismissed G&Ls because every model I saw had that narrow neck. It wasn't until someone pointed out their options page that they become a possibility to me.

    BDLH:
Have you considered a Larrivee Bakersfield?
Made at the Oxnard, California shop, I believe.
It comes stock with a 1 3/4" wide nut width and is a very high quality tele.
They are beginning to pop up used on the market as well.

They look very nice, but I've got that ASAT on order and that's probably it for me this year.

How long does it take for G&L to do a custom? I'd enjoy hearing more about your build.

The current wait from placing an order is 12 to 16 weeks. It takes 3 weeks to make a guitar.

I'm getting an ASAT Special, the model with a pair of big soapbar single coils. My main tweaking of the options was to order that wider neck, with an ebony fretboard and no inlay. I thought about getting stainless steel frets, but that was a $300 upcharge, and I was already feeling the pinch.

I should be getting the guitar any day, by my impatient reckoning. Will post pics and the gory details then.

Never really thought of a tele as a jazz guitar, but I guess I've never really played them enough to gain a substantial opinion on the matter. I think the thinline design would be ideal though. Why no F-holes? Nothing says jazz class more than an
    F-hole

For me, I like the minimalist look of no f-holes, and I don't like the pickguard on thinlines -- I prefer the look of the standard pickguard and control plate.

Those are my favorite guitar pickups, especially the neck pickup. I play an ASAT Special and love it.

Nah. Any Telecaster made from 1950-1970 with a 7.5" radius neck will do. Think Bickert & Greene. I use one all the time. Flatwound 11-50 helps.

Better get your "Made in Japan" decal quick, before they move production to China. The Japanese decals _have_ to sound better on a Telecaster than a Korean or Chinese decal. I wonder how much better the decal would sound if it were made in Fullerton?

You know, the painted on f-holes on my old Gretsch CA 6120 sounded fantastic. Maybe Fender should move up to paint from decals.
