Buscarino huh? That explains why that shade looks so good! Well as close as I'll ever get to a Buscarino is one of their ebony tailpieces I added to a Heritage Super Kenny Burrell. That was pricey enuf thank you very much!

I'm a Yunzhi owner. I was somewhat happy with the experience. Lora is very nice and will try her best to satisfy all your requests. My suggestions:
- I would recommend drawings, measurements, and photos for anything that deviates from the models you see on eBay and their online galleries. I ordered a "tie on" tailpiece and had to have someone inlay the ebony for the Sacconi adjuster because it was just laying on, and crushing, the edge of the rim. I don't begrudge them for this since they don't normally use the tie-ons and didn't even know what it was until i sent a photo. They found one and installed it without question.
- If you have any mechanical skills i would get it sans-electronics and do your own pickup install (but request a endpin jack.
- Plan for a fret level... the change in environment can cause havoc on the fretboard
- Plan to pay an import duty or other fee. Even though mine was marked as less than $100 i had to pay $80 (maybe the post office read it wrong but i wasn't about to argue since the claimed value was already dishonest)
Even after the $100+ for the fixes at the shop (rim ebony inlay, level and dress) it was a bargin and a really lovely feeling and unique sounding instrument. The best way to order one is to email them via the address published above.
Here is the one i had made:
-
I think import duty is supposed to be 4.6% of total value including shipping. If they charged you $80, that would be enough to cover $1739 worth of guitar, insurance, and shipping.
Interesting guitar. All of your experiences are about the same as mine. They have the best intentioned customer service ever but they don't know how to build every feature of every guitar out there. I'm on my fourth and I've learned to stick as close to the factory models as possible. Though I admit I'm tempted to try a carved back flat top next.

Thanks guys all invaluable help.
i have finalised details with Lora and sent deposit. I made sure to mention the help and contacts from here and she really has been very helpful too. I decided to leave only the electrics off in the end and plan to purchase a quality one and have it installed when it gets here by my guy here when he checks it out. I've figured the import duty in my sums and with luthier work this end I'll be looking to come in under £1000(bout $1400) which is crazy for hand carved!
The waiting begins..
-
In my case they (Yunzhi) claimed a low value for import so in theory i shouldn't have had any fee, so something got screwed up, but i wasn't about to press my luck and haggle with USPS. Post pics when you get it.

All of them appear to have crooked pickguards - they don't line up with the strings.
-
After sending deposit, Lora has quickly replied with some top and back choices and have opted for one with a box already made up.

Some lovely flame I think

Very nice wood on that ready to go body. I have nothing but terrific things to say about Yunzhi, Ms Lora is really terrific.

What with the crooked pickguard? I've been seeing it on every recent Yunzhi.

You can also ask them to include a second pickguard to install yourself at any angle you please. These run like $15 for a solid ebony pickguard and I recommend getting one when the guitar is purchased since the part is cheap but shipping is high. I have 3 extra pickguards just to play with different pups and to take my floater to pure acoustic if I feel like it.

Nice figure in those guitars Spook.

I'm going with burst a tad lighter than yours so hopefully that flame will stand out.

Very cool guitar. It looks like there is some kind of diagonal grain on the first few frets of the fingerboard. Or is that just a photo effect?

There are some lighter brown lines in the wood too as well as the kind of "flame" you are seeing. The communication with Lora was excellent and when the burst was suggested that it may have been a little on the reddish side their was no hesitation in re-doing. The pick guard came as i had asked which is set lower and more level with the strings and the tuners feel quite solid. I requested no electronics and have still to finalise my decision but the K+K Definity is the frontrunner.

The burst looks redder in the pictures than it actually is and colour is more a deep brown.

I loved the Buscarino sound port and asked if something similar could be added. Some may say rip off but I'm not trying to pass it off as one..just a homage

Inside the guitar is as clean as a whistle and puts to shame some guitars i have at 3x the cost.
Yes there are a few minor blemishes around the neck join but luckily they can't be seen under the pick guard.
I have not yet spent enough time with it to give a decent sound review (10 mins only) but can say its very loud

Nice looking instrument, Ian! Congrat's!

Wow Ian.. that looks great. Really nice wood. I know what you mean about the burst and photographing it. My 18" also looks more red in photos and the binding looks like white plastic rather than figured maple. I like the sound ports. Never thought to get anything but a standard oval for mine. It's a nice touch. I dig the plain neck and headstock. Looks very clean. Overall a very classy looking instrument.
Do you have a higher end archtop to compare it to? I have several high end flat tops but that's apples and oranges. Looking forward to seeing what you think of the sound.
-
W-w-w-wow, gorgeous. Is that maple binding all over, even the f-holes?
-
Ian
Truly gorgeous !! They do very nice work.
All the best

Wow, she's a BEAUTY Ian!!!
I'd like to see a closer photo of the side port.
Question: Is the binding traditional plastic or wood. I can't tell, but it appears like traditional plastic, which for some strange reason I was under the impression was not Yunzhi's forte. Your archtop looks fabulous from every angle.
CONGRATS!!!

The exl has a faily thin neck and is a dream to play for 30mins but starts to get uncomfortable there after. The Yunzhi's neck is more D shaped so more in commen with the Epi however 1 3/4 nut apposed to 111/16 for the Epi. This fits my style perfect which is mainly Fingerstyle playing.
