Standard caveat: Obviously people can do whatever they want with their guitars. It's all good.
But if you're only going to own one example of an iconic guitar, make it an authentic example that showcases why the design is iconic in the first place. A proper Telecaster has a solid ash body, maple neck, and vintage T-style single coils, with - of course - that heavy bridge. It's a fantastic combination. Try it out and be your own judge. Otherwise, you might end up with a cool guitar, but it won't be a quintessential Tele.
Once you've lived that, then you can experiment with other features and different pickups. It's kind of like music theory - learn all the "rules" first, then you can break them. It's more satisfying that way.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

I have a swamp ash maple neck Tele that I have tried the following pickups in the neck position
- SD Alnico APN traditional single coil
- SD Seth lover
- Vintage Vibe Charlie Christian style
- SD Vintage Minibucker
The SD Minibucker sounded the best out of all of them for jazz tones.
