Yeah I think so in fact I'm pondering about replacing my Monarch, asian KA, with one of these ... we'll see!

is the ground connected to the correct tab on the pickup, to check get a meter and see which tab you get continuity with the pickup case

Ordered an handwound one from Aaron Armstrong, for the Monarch,he told me this about the mass produced ones:

"I'm sure we could help you here, our hand made jazz guitar pickups do sound better than our mass produced ones as we use different production methods (i.e. we don't use plastic bobbins, which gives us more room to put in a larger guage of wire and more turns). I would recommend going for the one without pole pieces as this gives us the most space to make it as jazzy as possible. The cost would be £90 plus £5 shipping to Italy."

    What does that mean?

He probably meant "height adjustable pole pieces",with the screws in sight out of the cover case, since is the minihumb form,so smaller than a full size one, avoiding that, there is more space inside, can use bigger wire,I got it this way...

Hey, I sent Kent an email and he'd be able to supply me with the 12 pole PAF model for a great price that's significantly less expensive than the price on WDMusic. What do you think, should I pull the trigger? Does anyone have experience with this model? He says that it's his most popular but I figured I'd check with you guys before I go ahead and send out the check.

    You should go for it.
I have a Peerless Monarch which had one of the Asian made "K. Armstrong" floaters one it...I put the 12 pole Amrstrong on and it's a huge difference. Loads' more output - a mellow thicker sound. It's like it's a completely different guitar with the 12 pole pickup.

Yeah go for it.... mine will cost about a hundred Euros shipped, wich is good! Also I had confirmation from another guy who makes Pickups over here about the asian KAs,wich are not even comparable with the handwounds made by Kent or Aaaron,he's seen them just on a Monarch...and it was "Nirvana"....

I was also thinking about this:
    * WD Music Products - KENT ARMSTRONG® HANDWOUND MINI HUM NECK - MOUNT 12 POLE - BLACK METAL
    or this:
Kent Armstrong Adjustable Floating PAF (Handmade) - DjangoBooks.com

what is the difference in tone? both are 12 pole, the floating from djangobooks looks "better" for me in terms of size = stronger signal but... no idea.

Another thing is: how can I contact Mr Kent directly?

Thank you. Any thoughts about difference between those regular and mini hums?

In my opinion the handmade 12-pole floater (shown above from Djangobooks) is by far the best of the best floaters. If you want a very thin, arguably more acoustic, sound then it could be a little too full and rich for you. But I can not imagine having anything else on a floater equipped guitar.

Overall PU distance to the strings seems less critical on this PU vs. a BJB or similar mini-HB configurations. No thoughts as to why. I have only used them as a normal PG mount, so I have never retrofitted one with a neck extension mount.

Note that there is no lead wire. You solder onto connectors on the PG mounting tab. So the tab has to stay on there.

The tab looks alarmingly small but I am 4 1/2 years into one that is only glued on with Gorilla-brand CA, and it is fine.

If you stay up and night worrying about this sort of thing, you could add some very small screws, but stay WAY out to the edges of the tab, there are connections molded inside the tab.

LOVE this PU. Full, responsive, clear highs. The 12 pole adjustments seem overkill since I find it very forgiving for distance variations from the strings. But you can indeed calm down a loud B string if necessary.

    All in my opinion.

Oh and I would run, not walk, away from the Benedetto S6. It sounds quite good, but is horribly overcompensated for the B string.

The internal blades are deeply scooped under the B. The result is a very weak B string sound. I have no idea why this is not recognized and fixed.

Thanks Chris - the weak B is my problem since I'm using S6 I have piezo in bridge but I want to remove it and leave only one passive hum. Probably will go with handmade 12-pole floater as you mentioned. Thanks!

    Oh this is easy then.

If you have the S6 then I can describe the KA 12 pole PAF relative to that.

The KA is slightly brighter in the overall sound, BUT samples a longer part of the string so is also fuller.

This may sound contradictory but really - expect a slight amount more high and but also a balancing added richness.

So the guy four tables back at the gig will hear little difference, but you will. I guess the cork-sniffer term would be to say the KA is more articulate.

But the S6 is quite good in my opinion except for the awful B imbalance.

    Best of luck with this.

This is a timely re-emergence of a pup discussion.

I wrote Mr. Armstrong about what I think is a rather unique round hole archtop which sounds much more like a JUMBO Dreadnaught than I would have ever thought possible.

Hopefully he has an idea of what I have and will have a suggestion for me.

Yes these guys carry a nice range of archtop pickups, including the KA hand-wounds.
