Guys pretty busy days, sorry for the delay. Chris has already explained most of it... The mod will of course reduce the amp's headroom but I will ensure I don't blow speakers. I have a 4 ohm 200w cab that I really like, with the mod I know I don't go above 150w. About prices talk to Jon - mine was the first, I think he had to made some new stuff but now it will be ready for other customers.
About speakers.... No one cares about jazzers. Tube guys stay in the 50w area a lot and when they pass it they go 2 speakers or 4 like metal heads. So brands don't really care about a neo 250w watts good sounding speaker.
My solution: a big Dr Z cab with an EV and another big Dr Z cab with two Jensen Tornados - 200w 8 ohm the first, 200w 4 ohm the seconf. They both manage my Henriksen and my future Mambo (the Tornados with the half-power mod).
For small gigs I ordered two 10 mambo cabs. I hated the Beta on the Henriksen but find it quite nice with the mambo... I hope the Henriksen will be acceptable too with some eq pedaling. My trolley takes the two mambo cabs, one head (henriksen or mambo), a small pedalboard and some extras.
I prefer the EV or the Tornado for jazz but the Betas are necessary for the small cabs.
PS - The Mambo is 75w at 16 ohm. You can probably use a WGS-65 with no worries.

This is from another thread. Things should be clear on both topics.
Franz1997
heard from Jon this morning. He says the only enquiry he hasn't responded to in the last week is from someone who wants an ''endorsement'' deal.....
Myself:
It's explained then... I really thought it was weird. Jon always replies pretty fast and pretty helpful to all questions - and I asked A LOT of things before I ordered. He's been keeping me posted about the amp development on regular basis without even any questions from me.
So I think it's important to have this clear because the Internet can be a bad place sometimes. Jon is real, the site is real, the amps are excellent and he will build them for anyone who wants to pay the price - which is more than fair considering what you get.
PS - I think he's been pretty busy and new orders might take a while but he's telling that to customers, Oldane just talked about that recently on a thread. He will not try to misled anyone on any way.

Jon kindly sent me the Mambo demo amp (8" wedge design) to try out last week. My comments are based on trying it out at home at living room volumes.
The amp is tiny and lightweight so would be easy to carry around if using public transport for example.
The build quality seems very good - good quality controls and switches and the cabinet is ruggedly built and looks like it would survive gigging no problem.
The wedge design is useful in that you can tilt the amp up at an angle if required.
As others have said, you have a couple of preset switches and then the conventional tone and volume controls (see the website for specific details). It was very easy to dial in a sound by picking the preferred presets and tweaking the conventional tone controls a little. I prefer not to use pedals if possible so was pleased to find a decent reverb built in.
The 8" speaker sounded surprisingly good for its size. I used to own another jazz combo with an 8" closed back cabinet and my impression was that the Mambo's sound was more "open" and not as "midrangy". My expectation would be that the 10" Mambo would be even better for jazz guitar by virtue of pushing more air.
Very nice amp!

I prefer 12" speakers...so it must be heavy,,,:-(

I'm with you on that Kris.

Anyone tried these for styles other than jazz? I'm looking for something more portable than my valve combo and had been considering various options including the ZT Club. But I need something more versatile than a specialist jazz amp.
-
I have been dealing with Jon and have ordered a 10" wedge amp. Refreshing to deal with the designer/builder and despatcher of the amp, a real personal service. He must be very confident in the quality of his amps as he requests a deposit (returnable if not happy when tried amp) with a request that once you have really got to know the amp and are satisfied then pay the balance.
Amp due to be delivered in next couple of days .I will post my impressions re the sound with my Peerless Maestro archtop with floating Kent Armstrong p'up and my Renaissance with the Epiphone humbuckers.
Will eventually put a short vid about the amp on Youtube. Sound wont do it justice I know but to actually see the amp "in action" may be of interest to some of you guys.

Does one single head power two cabs ??? is this ... stereo ? Or maybe you intend to own two heads too ?

are these available in the US yet?

Jon Shaw only sells direct currently, to keep cost down...but they are available 120/240v , or at least the heads are. Can't imagine it costs too much to send one across the pond...
-
Just one head, mine has two outputs, regular ones have four. Mine only has two because of the many mods I asked.

What do I think of my Mambo 10" wedge amp.
Its absolutely the dogs bollocks. My Maestro has a Kent Armstrong floating pickup which gives it a lovely accoustic "feel" this amp simply makes the natural guitar sound louder. You can add depth and harmonics but the depth and warmth of sound is stunning. The Renaissance has Epiphone humbuckers and the sound is like warm honey dripping off a spoon. This amp can be wound up to give some stonkin' sounds but it is designed for clarity and warmth which it delivers in spades.
Jon Shaw is so confident about the amps that he will either lend you a small 8" to try or gig with or (as I did) if you pay a deposit of £150 he will build you your amp and if you dont like it you can send it back and your deposit will be refunded. I have been playing for 40 years and this is the best amp I have ever heard. There is no,I repeat NO digital overtones as with all other amps and it is totally silent in operation,a bit disconcerting!, no humm or buzz so perfect for recording. I was going to put a demo on Youtube eventually but I agree with Jon when he says the tone and sublety of the amp would never come across on the poor quality sound on the internet.
The build is excellent and the volume would blow your windows out whilst maintaining the warm sound. Of course if you factored in effects loops then you would get the effects uncluttered by the amp. As you can gather I'm in love with this beautiful little amp
Cheers

Damn...I think that puts you ahead of me. I will probably receive mine in January by the time it ships over the Atlantic Ocean. I don't mind the wait though. Jon's customer service has been excellent, and I did ask for a slight custom mod.
-
What are the waiting times for receiving the amp?
-
It's probably, because I am in Europe.

I think, it's worth the wait.
I had been waiting for around 2 and a half weeks.

Amp and cabs here!!! Tried the amp briefly, sounded great, the reverb is much nicer this way.
I will give a full report in one week or two!
-
Can anyone comment on the low end/bass response of the 10 and 8 inch speakers of the mambo? Curious to see how it holds up.
-
The bass response of the 10" mambo is very balanced at '5', but when you push the bass control towards '10' the bass response is very pronounced - so there is lots of bass on tap, more than you'd ever use.
The 8" is much the same, but of course the amp sounds a little smaller overall than the 10
-
Isn't the 8" speaker more suitable for acoustic guitars and 10" speaker more suitable for jazz guitars? (in general)
-
I have to admit I'm stuck in the old school view of guitar speakers. I'd get the Mambo head and use a 12" or 15" cabinet. A 15" speaker has almost four times the area of a 8" speaker, and I just imagine it pushing out all that groovy air.
-
I have to agree with BDLH - I use the 10" mambo for portability, but the head with a 15" Emi legend cab is quite something else. Pity it weighs 35lb....
There is a snag. The head looks ridiculously small on top
There's nothing like a good 15" for jazz...or most other stuff..
-
Hi guys! I'm a new user and I've found this thread while searching on the net about jazz amps.
I was actually straight to buy a used Henriksen (110) I found but this thread made me think it's maybe time to try a mambo head or combo.
Have someone tried it with a raezer's edge stealth 12er cab?
I'm looking forward to hear your clips and to see your opinions on this amp!
-
I think we should make a thread somewhere about all possible mods you could think of for a mambo amp and possibly an estimate of their cost.

I contacted Jon about a Mambo 10 and to inquire about US shipping. He said he would ship to the US and the rate to my address was quoted at GB£67 / US$106.
I am thinking it over right now!
