"An interesting fact is that the silverface Deluxe Reverbs had better speakers than the blackface amp. The blackface had Oxford while the silverface could have either Oxford, CTS or Utah. Having experienced all these speakers in several Fender amps, we consider the CTS and Utahs to be superior to Oxford, particurlarly in single 1×12″ application requiring high performing speakers that can deliver both punch and sparkle. The good news is that you may get reconed Oxford speakers that sound awesome. There is your ultimate player’s and collector’s amp."

Just going back to the idea of increasing headroom with a more efficient speaker, I've got my eye on a 61' Ampeg Reverberocket in really good nick. I'm very tempted to get that and a Cannabis Rex (of course retaining the original speaker for resale). 18 watts and an efficient speaker should be ample I think?
The majority of the Jazz gigs I do don't demand ultra high volume (just enough to keep up with a lively-ish drummer) and when I need LOTS of volume I just run my ZT lunchbox into a 4x12.

It turns out, I have a Pyle speaker from 1980 in it, which used to be Utah.
-
What's the reference?
-
C1098102. Which I now realize is 81. 1098 is the manufacturer code for Pyle, I think? 1 the year and week being 2nd. Does that sound right?
-
Yes, that's what ii says here
Twin Speaker Code (translated the page to english)
Contact Fender for the specs on sensitivity, everytime I contacted them they were extremely helpful and quick.

The majority of Internet chatter seems to say these speakers are shit. Any thoughts?
-
No experience sorry but have read the same you did. The C Rex should match your amp well in theroy and make it louder and probably improve the sound. But if you like it as it is... maybe other forum membeber have experience with those fender speakers and replacements.

Cheers Themis.
I choose the amp against 10 other quality amps (vintage fenders, reissues, boutique etc) and went for mine because of the fatness and tone. I can't decide if the speaker is giving me part of that sound or holding the amp back...
-
Well the good thing about speaker replacements is that they're reversible...you can always buy one used and try it out for a while..

I've got a line on a second hand Rivera R55, what's the general consensus on these? Its not exactly a bargain price so I'm not sure if I should just hang on for a deal on a twin or something similar.

Great amp!I've got a line on a second hand Rivera R55
You can never miss with a Rivera, except a couple of high gain "rocky" ones, all of them are "sweet" things on the clean channel.
Then it has a lot of headroom to spare....
