    Hi all,

I am wondering if there are any of you out there using an MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay, and if so what settings are you using. Also, I am interested in finding out if you use an effects loop on your amp for the delay.

    Thanks for any information.

    Sharon

Using a CC but not so much for jazz...

Great for rockabilly slapback... I find I had to open mine and dial back the mod a little..

When I first got it I was usising it a bit for ambience .. regen at 10pm... delay at noon... level at 9 more or less...

Thx for the settings SamBooka. I'm using it for jazz and also with an edgier rock-type tone. I saw a YouTube that talked about opening the back. Perhaps I'll check it out.

9 o'clock straight across all three dials. Provides a fairly subtle bit of extra depth.

Since delays are used for so many different sounds, you've got to be more specific than asking what settings we use. Do you want my Pink Floyd or U2 setting? Scotty Moore or Dick Dale? Mike Stern or Kurt Rosenwinkel? I turn all my controls to 11 and head straight to the heart of the sun....it's getting hot....

You want to Carbon Copy settings for a Carbon Copy..? I would suggest turning the knobs (there are only 3...) and listening to the effect, rather..?
There is an 'IT' term for this sort of question (RTFM, can be 'googled'...), the rest is really up to you to find what's in there. I really don't see how someone else's settings help in any way. Just my opinion, no malice intended...

I googled delay settings for U2 "Where the streets have no name" tried it and realised that "my" settings were way off and as a result I was trying to play notes that the delay should have been "playing" for me.

Never hurts to ask (unless you are about to do something illegal/immoral.. then it is best to keep your mouth shut and just do it)

WOW! Hey thanks Dad! I hadn't thought of trying it MYSELF. You are too funny!

Of course I tried various settings. It's just that I wanted to find out what some of you have found on this forum that I might have not.

    Hey Cosmic Gumbo,

I think the settings for heading straight to the sun are most relevant here! So thx, and all the best to you!

Glad I was able to help. Be sure to pass back your favourite settings so that others with the same problem might benefit...

A common use is to fatten up a fender, with minimal delay, very wet mix, and no repeat.

I don't have that specific delay but have had some and still have two. Are you trying to achieve any specific sound?

    Hi Jorge,

For myself, I like the rich quality that a delay pedal can add, but seek to avoid the sound it can sometimes create--kind of as if it was bouncing off the walls of an auditorium. To a listener in a room, this unwanted quality often sounds like some sort of reverb, even when the reverb is off.

    Thx for any input.

I understand - delay is tough to use, it always seem to be "not enough" or "too much". I like the way "modern guys" mix delay and reverb - Rosenwinkel, Kreisberg, Lund, Hekselman etc... (although there are small differences on how they use it).

I don't have any experience with the carbon copy but I usually feel analog pedals mess too much with the tone. What I do with my pedals is to set a delay time that can be usable in all tunes and it's not too short nor too long, probably around 400ms? Not sure actually. After that I set the feedback at a level where it gives a nice trail to the sound that's not too long nor too short. And then I set the level in an audible but not messy volume. I do this with the reverb on because it's important both effects "blend".

The final test is playing a bebop melody with both effects on. If you can play those fast lines in a way where the delay is noticeable but it's not in the way of the melody you're set

    Hope this helps!

    Thank you very much jorge.

I think I might have access to a digital delay pedal (a Boss I believe), so maybe I'll try and get a hold of it and give some of your suggestions a go. And yes, I like the sound all of those players very much!

Good - so you're after the same I was. It gave me a lot of trouble finding that delay / reverb mix sound, basically I emulated records sounds until I got there. These days I can get it on almost any delay pedal... Boss ones are tricky for this because they have bright repetitions and the feedback knob messes with the level knob after a certain feedback point. I have one modded to have darker repeats and it's much better but I recently got a used Hardwire and there's no comparison. My other delay is a TC flashback, also very good for that (I am selling the oss). I use both on tape mode these days.

Feel free to ask any more questions and keep us posted on how your progress.

    Hi Jorge,

Looks like I need to take a trip to a music store and try out a wider variety of brands.

Funny thing.....I plugged an iRig/Amplitube from my cellphone into my amp, and it's the best sound I've gotten so far, i.e. none of that tin can residual. I suspect that there might be some reason however that people don't do this live, since I haven't seen it mentioned.

If anyone has some insight into why this is not a good idea, please let me know.

    Thx,

    Sharon

The two I mentioned are the best in their price-range for that purpose in my experience. Of course if you're willing to spend more money you'll find better. Good luck!

Used a Boss digital delay last night and the sound was so much better (i.e. less compromise in tone/less processed sounding) than with the analog!

    Thx for the tip!

BTW, experimented with using the Amplitube app from my iPhone last night as well. Not a successful experiment, as it took a lot of the power out of the amp.

Is Mike Stern delay at around 400 ms ? He adds a bit of chorus ... and to get dirtier
some Boss Blues Driver too? And for full on power solos he eventually adds distortion?
