    Wow, what a difference!

I wanted a "footless" bridge for my kingpin so I could experiment with the "pick up the world" pickup I picked up (pun intended) a few months ago...I ordered a rosewood bridge from ultimaguitar.com...not cheap, but very nicely done.

I'm thrilled with the results...took about 10 minutes to fit it to the top and it was good to go...really mellowed out the acoustic tone, added some bass, and killed a lot of the pings from the tailpiece. I'd actually say the guitar has a usable acoustic tone now. Very cool.

I'm going to install the pickup soon...this is gonna be fun.

How about a video? You can barly see the bridge, but it doesn't look that different anyway! But the sound is quite different--granted I'm playing more agressively, but if you listen to the video of "Misty" I did a few weeks ago with the old bridge I do think you can hear the difference....

    and Misty again, for comparison:

Jeff that Misty clip sound very good... I am thinking about one of these guitars, I need to let my 60s Guild at home more often and I want an affordable P90 / flats archtop to get that Jim Hall 60s tone.

How does it sound trough the Henriksen? Those new Eastmans also seem good but they're not availabe here in Lisbon (the Godin is from time to time) and I don't like buying guitars online.

    Thx fellas,

Jorgemg, the guitar sounds great through the henriksen (really nice with my princeton too)

It's a very "no frills" guitar. Some folks think the satin finish makes it look cheap but it doesn't bother me. Being that my hofner is getting tougher and tougher to replace, the godin is my take anywhere jazz guitar.

I don't care it looks cheap, I just it to sound and play good Good to know it sounds good amplified, that's what I mostly care bout (I even plan on putting some Bare Knuckles P90 in there).

I understand what you say, I love my X-500 so much - it's becoming completely priceless... and I am having lots of classes / jams / reharsals these days. I like my 335 copy a lot but I am getting to used to the archtop feel...

Actually, if you go on my website the recording I have of "laura" up there is the kingpin through a polytone.

It's pretty much a worry free guitar.

Nice! (so, that is UN-amplified?? Impressive.)

Loved the moment around the 25 second mark, when you were in "full cry" mode for a second. Or, at least SOMEONE was in full cry mode

How much sanding did it take to conform to the Kingpin top?

Not much...I'd say a minute of actual sanding...but I was careful and did a few scrubs, lifted the sandpaper and checked the fit, then scrubbed again, etc.

Marking where the bridge was with blue tape and taking off the strings and securing the tailpiece so it didn't scratch the top took longer than the actual sanding process...whole job took a beer and a half.

I'm very pleased with this mod...didn't add any volume, really, but really warmed up the tone...it's a pleasure to play unplugged now (it was always a pleasure to play plugged in)

That is exactly why I went to ebony on my EmpReg and ES165. What is curious is that I dont notice a huge difference (it is there, just subtle) in the electric tone.

Shows how important the pickup is...

My Kingpin sounds the same plugged in as it ever did.

[Booka, S.] >>> I dont notice a huge difference (it is there, just subtle) in the electric tone [of an ebony vs. metal bridge].

[B'mont] >>> Shows how important the pickup is... My Kingpin sounds the same plugged in as it ever did [yet has a profoundly different acoustic tone].

Ooooooh-ooooh. Transverse vs. longitudnal waves. (In case anyone is a physicist here: the words transverse and longitudinal are used here relative to the string length, not to the direction of a sound wave.)

PU's pretty much are incapable of sensing waves that primarily compress/expand the string along its length, while they are extremely sensitive to waves wiggling the string from side to side.

A bridge and guitar top do not share the selective sensitivity of a magnetic PU.

So your experiences really make quite a bit of sense in my opinion (and similar experience.)

    Probably should clarify here:

All sound waves through air are longitudinal, as far as this concept of guitar sound goes (not that anyone asked or would care).

Waves through a solid can be transverse or longitudinal.

I am mentioning above (again, not that anyone asked) the vibrations of the solid guitar string itself, and not the air that may be moved by the string.

Or to cut to the chase (and why did I not just start there in the first place,...):

Pickups do not sense at least two types of significant vibration that you hear acoustically from a guitar. So the idea that a bridge change can affect the acoustic tone far more than the magnetically "picked-up" tone makes quite a bit of sense.

    In my opinion.

Well, I understand what you are saying. I do have a scientific, analytical background, [medical, chemistry, statistics, not physics....], but it explains to me how a bridge change may not affect the sound through the pickup.

I am very glad to hear a bridge change helps the Kingpin's acoustic sound....the amp'd sound is just fine, but I would like to improve the depth of the acoustic sound. now I just have to create an order for some other stuff to justify the shipping costs for a new bridge!

    Hey Jeff - sounds great!

I'm not sure what you mean by "footless" bridge tho - I checked out the ultimaguitar.com site and couldn't find that exact phrase.

Do you mean one with a (relatively) flat bottom vs. one with the two "feet"?

    thanks!

Just listened to 'Laura'. Excellent tone from that combination. Excellent playing by the operator of the combo.

Mr. B, I played my first gig as half of a guitar/upright bass duo last night, and got home at 1am feeling pretty darned pleased about the way I'd played and sounded.

First thing this morning, I checked my e-mails and posts, and saw your video. Won't type what I said, (I'm far too polite) but it was an old English (in fact Anglo-Saxon) expression for which I will substitute "Back to the woodshed again".

Nice sound. Great playing. No, I'm really pleased for you - can't you see me smiling?

Just don't think that I won't be borrowing some of your stuff from that video, 'kay?
