I know this is kind of a loaded question, but before I build a new baffle for my gibson, any thoughts on wether I should go with the stock 4x10" speakers or a 15" there is plenty of room. I've seen a lot of 15" speaker jazz amps out there, figured I'd ask the pros. Thoughts?

I sure love the sound of the 4 tens of the Fender Super Reverb for jazz.

My amp isn't too far off from a super reverb either I don't think. Hmmm

I just realized I don't own any amps with a 12" speaker...I have an 8" speaker cab I use with my Henriksen, a 10" Fender Princeton, and a 15" Polytone.

    I like them all.

So by process of elimination, 12" speakers must suck. Okay, just kidding.

If those are your options, I'd stick with the 4x10.

I had the chance to experiment with a lot of different configurations with 4 different amps (ss and tube):

    -1X8 closed
    -2X8 closed
    -1X8 open
    -1X10 closed
    -1X10 with tweeter
    -1X12
    -1X15 open
    -1X15 closed

Most of the speakers I use come for Eminence or Weber. Like Mr B., I always got the tone I want even if it's a 8". But you have to get good speaker(s) that match your amp.

...Just realized that I never tried a 4X10 or 4X12...

A good friend has a '67 Super Reverb that sounds terrific, but for my playing I prefer my Bandmaster VM with a Weber California Ceramic 15 (pictured below). This rig has a sweeter top end than the SR. I've used 4-10s for bass, but other than borrowing the Super, I've not used them for guitar. The owner of the SR tells me the BM/Weber is my "signature sound," for what that's worth.

I just got my hands on a '65 Bassman head and hope to try it out tomorrow night, but that really requires a 4 ohm load (the Weber is 8). I'll report back -- I'm going to initially run it into 2 10" speaker cabs for the proper load.

I get the roundest bassiest "lowendest" sound from this:

    2X5" speakers, 11,5lbs....

Pierrot - What brand of cabinet is that? I can't make it out from the logo. Thanks

Yes, I have a 67 Super that I love for jazz... I also had a Super head made and a cabinet with a 15" speaker and this is my favorite. The Super is a bit on the heavy side and I can work with the head and cabinet combo much easier. I actually prefer the 15 to the 4 10's... Good luck!

That's a Phil Jones Cub. Cool little suitcase of an amplifier. Not the loudest, but they sound great.

Rmcali2, as Mr.B already said, it's a (quiet) 100W amp. More a question of quality than quantity.

The smoothest sound I've ever had and the sound I love the most is 2 10s.

I ran an Epiphone Howard Roberts through a Fender Vibrolux Reverb with 2 JBL D-110F speakers for years and loved it.

Two 10s gives you plenty of bottom and the smaller 10" speaker has quicker transient response than a bigger speaker.

My ZT Lunchbox has one 6.5 speaker, with an identical extension cab, for 2x6.5 total.

I really dig my recently added Standel studio S15 g amp a nice big 15" JBL speaker in it. It is just an awesome tone and sounds damn near tube like. I am in LOVE with this amp. I really love the sound of a 15" speaker. I am also a fan of a 12" speaker. I feel, that for me, I get a bit more bottom from the bigger speakers and I like that kind of dark tone ala Wes and Jim Hall.

i think its really hard to say how a speaker is going to sound until you try it. i always assumed that 10" are ALWAYS brighter than 12"s. which as it turns out, is NOT the case. it may be in some instances, but there is no real substitute for plugging the bad boys together.

that being said, i get stressed even thinking about dragging 4 10" to a gig, thats gotta be HEAVY.

the question i would ask first is. is my guitar general bright or dark sounding...then base the speaker choice off of that. even still, my Epi can be dark and sounds EVEN darker with the 10" in my PR clone...go figure.

12's tend to be fuller than 10s - and if you have a big cabinet with 12s that can mean some boomy sounds that can give you "too much". But if you can tame it they can give you a more deeper / fuller sound in my expericence (sort of like PAFs, stronger sound than a P90 which can lead to unbalanced results sometimes but if you handle it they sound more fat).

My amps have mostly been 1x12 open back combos. For the past few years, if I needed a fuller sound, I'd add a sealed extension cab with a 10 in it, and it sounds mighty sweet combined with the 12. Very versatile.

The EVM 15L is the fattest and clearest speaker I've ever heard

@jazzkatten: OK, I'll do that for you, give me some time.

@Kris: The PJ is great for small gigs, if the drummer isn't a gorilla;-)

Hi, I've made a comparison between 6 small amps, including the Phil Jones.
I thought it would perhaps deserve its own thread:

    Hope you find it interesting;-)
