Chicago driving:
By way of background, I worked in Detroit and Pontiac for many years. I eventually figured out the traffic pattern, but still it amounted to a lot of car time and occasional near-death experiences from bad drivers.
I never liked driving to and from downtown Chicago while living in Michigan. Had I done that frequently I might have learned the timing and techniques better. But each time I did it, I told myself I'm not doing it again. Over time I forget how awful and stressful it was. The last time I did it I made a video of the heavy traffic and moving four lanes over in a short distance. Whenever I think about driving back there, I watch it.
I now take the train. It's easy and not too expensive, even if I have to take a cab, bus or Uber when I get there. The train gives me quality alone time also.
I've driven in several large cities over the years. Two examples are NY and Boston. No thanks. I don't think Detroit is necessarily better, but once I learned how to drive there and was oriented, it was okay. It was never exactly fun, especially merging from an on-ramp into 90 mph traffic, But I had a RX-7, which helped a lot.
