I use an old Cube 30 amp most often while practicing. I have a set of AKG K240 studio phones and they sound horribly shrill plugged into this amp. They sound completely unlike anything that comes out of mu amp. It is completely unsatisfying and headache inducing. Would I be better off with "hi fi" phones one would use with their stereo? I am wide open for suggestions please. I'd like to not spend $$$$ if possible, under $150. Would be great. The K240's were chosen based on multiple high rated user reviews; I could not believe how atrocious they sound for this application. I blasted them with high volume from my stereo for a couple days which maybe softened them a little but they still are painfully shrill. Fwiw I suffer hereditary high frequency hearing loss, I can't imagine how anyone with normal hearing could use them. Thanks for any suggestions or tips.

I recently began to need to use headphones to practice at home. I ended up with Sennheiser HD 599. I got them for $99 on sale last Jan. I'm no audiophile, but they work well for me with my bud 10.

Studio phones are a lot different than speakers. Mine require a very different EQ than what comes out of the speaker. They tend to be brighter and highlight every little detail.
You could spend more money but since you have them its pretty easy to just run a little EQ box..even a 20 dollar behringer from your guitar and have it set where you ilke it. Nothing is wrong with the phones, its what they are made to do...be super even and color little or nothing. Straight singals are not that attractive.
Also if you put an EQ in front of it you can give it a boost which helps headphones sound a little less sterile. In my limited experience (and from others here) you arent gonna get the sound from your phones that you get from a cabinet combined with the space you are in. I found it best to use an eq pedal and dial in a sound I liked...not necessarly the sound I want from a cab. Its easier to just consider it a different amp/space and even guitar.
