In 1904, John Ambrose Fleming built the first vacuum tube, which he called the "Fleming valve", for which he received a patent on 16 November 1904. It was the first electronic rectifier of radio waves, converting alternating-current radio signals into weak direct currents detectable by a telephone receiver.
