This is just entertainment. After years of in-and-out-perusal of this forum, I joined about a year ago. Since then I have spent a lot of time mining the forums for older threads, finding an endless supply of interesting posts. One was a post by @Max405 from about 4-1/2 years ago. He had bought a Vestax D'Angelico NYL-2 in red. He was effusive in his praise for it and made some comments about how seductive and beautiful its red finish was, somewhere between wine and cherry. It truly was a beautiful guitar. And of course I found posts from people who dislike red for guitars, or even despise it. So we can rile up those haters to boot. Anyway, let's get everyone's red guitars out for a show, so I'll start with mine. Some of my guitars are red...
1991 Gibson ES165 (L), 1992 Gibson ES165 (R). The '91 I bought new in early '92. The '92 was originally a Yamano order for Japan, spec'd for a Bigsby. I replaced the Bigsby with a brass L-4 tailpiece from Maddie Moore's personal collection. I still have the Bigsby, if I ever sell the guitar. There's a story why I have two of these 165s, but it's too long for this post. In any case, both are supposed to be Cherry Red but the first-year-of-production 1991 is brighter. The '92 is brighter than wine red was then. 490R pickup in each. Notice the 1991 had the pole-pieces orientation flipped from normal, at the factory. Also notice how much darker the rosewood fingerboard is on the '92. I have to mention that when I replaced the Bigsby, it was obvious the guitar had been built with a regular 165 tailpiece, which was changed out with the Bigsby before shipping to Yamano. I was surprised to see Gibson hadn't bothered to fill the already-drilled holes for the 165 tailpiece when they re-drilled for the Bigsby and screwed it in over the original body holes. Tsk, tsk.
2009 Gibson ES165 with floater (L), 2001 Gibson L5 Wes (R), both wine red. This 165 does surprisingly-well acoustically with its laminate top, and I li ke the BJB floater just fine. It's altogether a different sound than the initial edition of the Herb Ellis with set-in full-size 490R humbucker.
2002 Gibson L4CES (L), 2001 Gibson L5CT Acoustic (R), wine red and cherry respectively.
1990 Gibson USA ES335 (L), 2024 Gibson Historic 1964 ES335 Murphy Labs Ultralight Aged (R). 490R/T pickups in the 1990, Custombuckers in the 1964 Reissue.
2024 Fender Japan Hybrid II Quilt Beryl Red (L), 2011 Seymour Duncan SD35 with Zephyr Silver-wound humbuckers, wine red (R).
I have had a few red guitars over the years. At present, I own 20 guitars and the only one that is red is my 1996 Gibson L-5 Wes Montgomery. Here is a picture of me playing it during a concert with Larry Coryell back in 2007.
First, a red strat... year unknown but probably late 70s. Much more red than it appears in that old photo. That is me dressed as Rick Nielson for Halloween one year in the early 80s. I won first prize at a bar that had a costume contest. I didn't take the guitar to the bar but I made a replica out of cardboard. I traded that a few years later for a black Explorer.
Second, a 1996 Epiphone Howard Roberts that I no longer have - it was stupid to get rid of it.
Third, a 1984 Yamaha SA2000. I still have that one!
Fourth, a Player II Telecaster that I got a few months ago. It is one of the chambered versions of the Player II. It now has a Lollar p90 in the neck.
This early ESP hardtail was my first 7 string. It’s beautifully made, plays great, and sounds wonderful - it’s a keeper.
I loved the ESP so much that when I was ready to switch fully to a 7 and wanted a better one, I custom ordered this Carvin in ‘94. I got a gig at the San Diego Marriott, so I ordered it when the gig was booked and picked it up at the factory. The only 7 string archtops available then were luthier built and expensive, and I wanted to be sure I was fully comfortable before selling my 6 string archtops & committing fully. The Carvin served me well for many years before I sold it to another forum member when we retired & downsized.
When Ibanez announced the introduction of the AF207, I ordered one. It arrived at my dealer in the fall of ‘97 and was my only gigging archtop until I got my Eastmans over 20 years later. It’s not red, but my 810CE7 is -
Nothing wrong with a nice red guitar. Here are a few interesting ones. The Baker and the custom-ordered Collings both went to friends. I still have the Otwin, for now.
I'm pretty well 100% certain that he didn't do penta modes in the sense you're using the term in this thread, as modes of the standard pentatonic scale. He certainly did pentatonics and recommended...
I hear a rather dramatic difference in volume between my Toob Metro BG+ and my Vibrolux Reverb used as a cabinet with the SBUS. The two 10" cannabix rex speakers in parallel (therefore 4 ohms) are...
It's simple, Jim. The speaker's efficiency is the main guide to how much volume it will emit from the same signal. This is typically measured as SPL at 1 meter from the cone with a 1 Watt signal. ...
The more I learn something about JHS Pedals, the more they feel interesting to me.
For instance, the Haunting Mids, the Double Barrel... or this Clover, and a few more.
If you decide to give it...
Try slowing it down on youtube and singing or playing some of what he's doing. I don't have a guitar handy, but just listening at half-speed and singing some of the phrases, it's mainly...
The Formula 51 came last week and I played 2 gigs this weekend running the pedal directly into my QSC speaker and it was perfectly acceptable. I'm not a tone hound, but plugging the guitar directly...
