I have an opportunity to do some casual busking with a violin. no amps or reinforcement, jazz and swing standards. Thinking a Loar LH700 might be good? Budget is a little flexible; I'll have no chance to play a Loar or most others, except the Godins which are around a little. Suggestions? Be nice to find something not too far away either (eastern Iowa.) Thanks!

Maybe a lower level vintage Epiphone, like a Blackstone or Zenith.

With apologies for not suggesting an answer to your actual question, would like to note that a small battery powered amp would let you use whatever you already have.

Two simple battery amps I've used sucessfully with my Loar 700 with floater are a Peavey Solo and a Crate Limo. Both discontinued!

You're right of course, and battery amps have improved greatly. I'm interested in the idea of purely acoustic, played lots of electric music over the years, really just want the simplicity. And I have no archtops, sold some flattops and moving away from bluegrass to something different.

Try a Gitane or Altamira Selmer style guitar or a resonator.

I use a Gitane DG-300 for this exact purpose - it does the job.

If you still have a flat top, use it. I love my flat top for accompanying both vocalists and instrumentalists. Its big voice sounds beautiful while letting me play more gently than I'd have to do on most acoustic archtops to be heard unamplified. I set it up with very low action, and there's nothing I can't do on it that I could do on my "jazz" guitars.

Be aware that the Loar has a really big neck.

You say that like it's a problem.

When I played the Loar, I was thinking ... nice, but this neck while not a pencil could be a little thicker....

I would say not really big but a slightly different shape to a lot of guitars. I bought mine unaware and didn't even think about it. It felt good and caused no issues.
