Bought one a while back and used it today to change strings on a few of my guitars,
All I can say, is why did I wait so long to get the proper tool , it makes that task so easy now, it's almost a pleasure versus using the old dunlop cantilevered ill fitted rigid plastic tool...The D'addario has a small ball bearing socket and fits basses and all manners of guitars pegs. It holds tightly/securely and when winding doesn't bang or slide onto adjacent pegs.
For sure, there are other alternatives out there but, for the price this made all the difference for me. If I had to do this day day out I would get an electric one but for the occasional strings replacement chore, that tour grade winder does the job.

Does it operate by battery?

It's hand wound (i.e.no power) I guess it's "digital"

I find that winders usually bang against the guitar and are prone to leave semicircular marks, do any of these avoid that?

The D'addario tour grade winder has peg grooves with different stops at the end, depending on the pegs on the guitar /bass, so far they hold very well and don't knock about like the others I 've tried in the past...They fit snuggly on the 2 guitars I've used them with. Also they are made of a non slip material, from the site : "non-marring socket", not plastic or hard edge material...You can observe this on the pics I've posted there are 3 depths for some of the grooves and that snugs up against your tuners really nice..I've used them on GOTO and larger Schecter locking tuners .

Best price I found was Sweetwater at $15.99 with free shipping.

I ordered the MusicNomad MN221 for $12.99. It lacks the D'Addario bridge peg puller, but there's 10mm hex wrench on the end to tighten tuning machine bushings.

bearings?

As you can see from the photo posted by the OP, there are ball bearings where the handle meets the head, visible through the little plastic window at the end.
Queue the joke from "The Three Amigos" about the male plane.

You want bearing? We got dual bearings!

Missed that in the description

..." But wait, there's more. It's a string winder AND a pepper mill, and triples as a salt mill too !! ""
Crank Salt Or Pepper Mill, 7"

I picked up one of these today. No idea how it compares to anything but it's really nice. Ultra smooth and stable.
