As an aside, do you folks concur that this pickguard shows evidence of off-gassing? (Pardon the question but I have no experience with this condition.) The top appears to be in good shape but the bottom does show evidence of cloudiness. Thanks!

Yes. Replace the pickguard. Send the old one to Paul Fox and he'll make you one to match. Paul is who Gibson uses.

The 1/8 jack on my 69 JS still works and I would not give up the sound of the original gray cord.

FWIW: Using my approach, both jacks are wired in parallel so you could still use your original gray cord as desired.
