I used to have a string cleaning spray and I used that with a cloth to wipe the strings after every use. I also snap the wound strings against the fretboard to dislodge any funk.
After the commercial fluid ran out and I started using an electrical pot cleaning spray that contains a lubricant to clean the strings. It works well. It’s also good on dirty pots! A set of strings lasts me for several years.
When I played more fingerstyle the string wear and corrosion happened more over the pickup area and when that started to feel rough to me I would replace strings even if they were holding tune and intonation fine. Lately, I have been more focused on strict alternate picking so this type of wear has gone away.

I use the string cleaner tool shown above, I spray a little "Fingerease" on the pad, and then run it up and down the strings after a gig, or rehearsal. I can vouch that it does work!!! The Fingerease loosens any sweat, dirt, or residue from the strings, and keeps the strings lubricated.
Arnie..
