I've always thought of big band swing guitar as felt but not heard.

You can't always hear the guitar in a swing big band, but if it wasn't there, you'd know something was missing.

I read once that big band swing guitar is like the vanilla in baking. You shouldn't really taste it, but you'd know something is missing if it was.
