How would watermarking fix anything? If I wanted to make a fraudulent ad I would just grab a watermarked picture. Now my fraudulent ad even looks more legit.

Sellers who don't want their pics reused can use freeware graphics programs to add their own watermarks before posting. A quick google search brought up links to 18 free programs that can add watermarks to images.
Afa Reverb goes, they could end up watermarking pics lifted from other sources. Kinda useless.

A watermark is a unique identifier of the original owner/seller.

A watermark can be integrated into an an image so that removing it would degrade it. If a seller used such a recycled image it would be fuzzy and turn off potential buyers. The quality and thoroughness of pics provided can be indicative of the sellers ethics.

I'm not surprised we don't share a similar sense of humor. This is a classic bit that's well-known and well-regarded in comedy circles. It was part of Brian Doyle-Murray's stand up routine in the 1970s.
