Not quite, but close. IIRC all elements heavier than helium and some lithium (everything heavier than hydrogen) were synthesized by fusion in stars and then thrown out into the universe to eventually arrive here to construct the earth. Only hydrogen, helium and a little lithium were present soon after the big bang. So copper on earth is at least several billions of years old, which is old enough. Originally Posted by AllanAllen

Was looking at the Sheratons too. Unfortunately it looks like all but the Pro model have abandoned the five piece neck, which is a little disappointing because it was such a sweet feature of the originals and they finally had downsized the monster headstock on the newer versions. Too bad because the five piece neck was super stable and their "60's slim taper" was actually fairly average in size compared to a genuine Gibson slim taper. Id like to add that when you worship Gibson bear in mind they dumped an entire workforce without regrets and they were the ones responsible for their quality reputation. They kicked an american factory town right in the kinyioki's and then bragged about it. How many generations of Kalamazoo had worked for them and built that reputation. My wife was born there so we knew some. Just sayin, and yes Im being provacative on purpose because I worked in factorys like that when I was a kid and I know what those jobs meant to those workers. (and Im old and crabby)

Yeah it’s really unfortunate how corporations have become more and more aggressive towards profits at all costs. Just like in the music business as technology has advanced replacing human workforce in so many bad ways.
But it’s ultimately up to all of us not support them when they offer lower priced products. And that’s really hard to do! Just look at Walmart and McDonalds as the forerunners in this practice.
We all have to make balanced judgements on our purchases.

I need cheap guitars for work. Epiphone is offering a quality instrument at a reasonable rate so I am willing to give them a close look. After owning many American guitars and watching the hype deflate itself as I shipped a CS strat with at warped neck and lifting finish back to the factory for six months all the pedigree became meaningless. It's a tool. A tool either does the job or it doesn't do the job. Country of origin means nothing to me any longer. Any guitar can be exceptional, it doesn't have to be made in the states to qualify, it just has to sound good. Originally Posted by jads57

It seems plausible that receiving an MBA completely removes even the possibility of having empathy. Not sure why everyone decided to crap politics in a thread about Epiphones when there is almost a new Eastman thread created here everyday and all you ever hear is "oh Eastman is great blah blah". Eastman don't make an actual ES, just oddly shaped weird looking pseudo copies in mini-me sizes. I have compared a Sheraton pressed out on that same press in the video I linked and it was EXACTLY the same shape as my Gibson ES.
Apparently no one gives a shit about country of origin except a few people on guitar forums because when I checked last night they were all backordered from GC and Sweetwater. Helps me save a little money for now, lol. Maybe I'll try to pick one up for under a grand used in a few months. Maybe even cheaper if I can find one local on CL. Until then maybe I can find one to handle someplace.

There is a business model where the business operates for the good of the workers and community. It's called socialism. Unfortunately, we know how that works out in the long run. If Gibson had stayed in Kalamazoo they would have gone out of business a long time ago.
We had a good run for standard of living in the US and Europe. Looks like the rest of the world wants a slice of that now. Protectionism will slow it down. So will wars. But it won't stop it. So I'll just watch from the cheap seats and enjoy playing bargain guitars.

They did a short run of Byrdlands so I would say it's not out of the realm of possibility. Those used Byrdlands were running around the 3k mark last time I looked about two years ago. Kinda spendy for an Epiphone but about half of what a Gibson costs. Originally Posted by icr

I tried a bunch of Epiphone imports from a 335, Sheraton,Riviera, SG, Les Paul ‘58 Explorer,etc.
Have to say not that impressed overall. Not bad instruments but nowhere near their Gibson cousins. And that’s from neck angle to steep, hardware, finish etc.
They are fine instruments for the money,and certainly great for lower cost alternatives or beginners. But it’s a stretch to say they would even compare to to Gibson USA brand imo.
I guess it would be silly for Gibson to make equal quality instruments for such a low price. And probably put themselves out of business!

However, there has never been and will never be a country sized cooperative system including a broad swath of the economic landscape. The only large scale experiment I know of was Stalin's Russia where he took over all the family farms and made them into giant cooperatives. Of course, millions died of starvation because it was a stupid infeasible idea. But it was on a very large scale. So cooperatives are a thing. Cooperativism isn't. And if it was, it would produce crap guitars.

Maybe.. maybe not. They could keep Gibson USA as a halo brand. Then try to up their game with made-somewhere-else guitars to compete with everybody else.
