I could swear I have heard Joe Pass playing with his toggle switch in the middle position (both pickups on). I've heard this more than once. However, I can't recall which recordings I've heard this on. Anyone else here noticed Joe playing with the switch in the middle position? I've heard a few other traditional jazz players do this. I know it's not all that unusual. But I've just found it interesting.

Pass I haven't noticed, but Philip Catherine did it all the time.

Assuming you're referring to recordings made w his ES175? I think that's the only guitar he used w twin pu's.

I personally prefer the traditional neck pickup for most jazz playing. But there are some mixed pickup settings that I occasionally like. I will use the bridge pickup for straight/traditional blues and "jump blues." But I'm mostly a jazz player.

Jimmy Raney did it also.

The Ibanez signature model sounds a somewhat like the middle position on a two-pickup guitar or the middle pickup on a three-pickup guitar. Also, his earliest recordings were done with a Fender Jaguar, which has that kind of trebly sound as well. Maybe you're thinking of one of those.
