I've been using Dunlop stubby 3mm and get a nice dark sound and can drive the soundboard more when needed. Recently tried a Dunlop jazz III which is much thinner sounding and way more treble.

Was interested in your thoughts on a good gauge to use and also what gauge pick did Johnny Smith use.

No clue on Johnny, but if you think a Stubby is dark, you owe it to yourself to try a D'Andrea Pro-Plec.

Goes to show how everyone's ears are different i guess, I find the Stubby's painfully bright.

What I've found is string gauge in combination with pick gauge gives all sorts of different results. What gauge strings are you using and flat or round?

V picks makes a pick called the Farley which supposedly is a copy in size and shape of the pick Johnny Smith used in 1980.

Apparently, some photos show Smith using the Gibson star pick, which was supplied with new Gibson guitars in the 1950s, and in the Pick of the Stars set. It was made by D'Andrea in celluloid.

The material the pick is made of makes a huge difference in the tone produced, actually more than the thickness IME. I have picks made from a wide variety of materials, and in a wide range of thicknesses. They mostly live in a box, but sometimes I trawl through it and refresh my memory about their tone. I like Blue Chip picks, for a variety of reasons, but also the black John Petrucci Jazz III picks. I can't say I've ever heard him play, but I like his signature picks. It's one of the few Ultex picks I like. I have picks made from various woods, bone, horn, stone, celluloid, old CDs, and many different plastics. All sound a little different, either darker or brighter. I have no Big Stubbys to compare to, though. I don't personally like really thick picks, but that's an entirely subjective subject. My only suggestion is to buy a bunch of picks and see which you prefer. Picks are among the cheapest accessories you can buy, but their effect on tone is among the greatest.

For my WesMo, I use Chicken Picks' "Badazz III 3.2". For most of my guitars I use a Fender "Medium" and for my acoustic guitars, a Fender "Heavy".

I've been toying with the idea of trying a felt pick for my WesMo lately.

I have one. Lots of pick noise and bright. I find V Picks in general to be bright.

Also try a (big) Stubby 3mm in Nylon , the grey ones

I've changed over to them now
Not quite as bright as the purple ones ....
