The standard forever was nitrocellulose, and pretty much still is. Some manufacturers use polyester or other 'poly' finishes, but tradition dies hard, and it's difficult to get archtop players to accept them.

For some strange (and wonderful) reason, my 2007 'BlueBurst' Heritage H-575 hasn't changed colors or faded much over time.

A very slight blue-greenish hue is visible in the lighter mid-section. I keep it in its case when not being used, and never take it outside, avoiding the sun's UV rays.
