I want to get back into recording. I do not have a priject studio any more, so I have to go with out mic’ing amps. In my research… the UA OX seem to do the “amp thing” the best sounding, but I do not want to spend that amount of money.

However, any IR loader should work, given the quality of the IR… right?

… so, the only issues I can think if it the A/D conversation… so any 32bit floating 96 loader should be as good sounding as the UA… right? (Yes the OX gives you options, but I assume finding the right IR should work the same, with some post eq).

    Am I missing some aspect?

You could try a Bray LO-1 line out box for $55 direct from David Bray. It goes between the speaker output of your amp and the speaker itself, and taps a line level signal from the signal being sent to the speaker. You then route this signal direct into your DAW using your existing audio interface and whatever IR plugins you have. I used it with Logic and Space Designer, the built in IR loader. It works really well for what it does. It is not a load box, so the speaker still needs to be connected. So if sound level is not your concern, and you just want the flexibility of IRs, this is a great and cheap solution.

I've tried a few (pedals and plugins) and they all sound the same, given the same IR.

Here's a link to a nice free plug-in. It does mono, stereo and dual mono plus it has some EQ capability as well.

If you have an effects loop you can route the 'send' to any number of cabinet simulators or into your PC via a USB interface where you have IR's loaded. This only covers part of your preamp though and depends on how the loop is set up for your amp. If you want to sound of both your preamp and amp sections, not sure how you do that without either a mic or reactive load as you're looking to capture the output of a power amp. The Bray L0-1 Wzpgsr mentioned seems designed for this though.
