Most decent condenser mics (like mine) require 48v PP. But most high end acoustic amps only provide 24v. Why bother? I still have to use an external 48v box, just another thing on the floor to have to plug in, and two more cables to be a mess.

My understanding is the spec is 12-48v and very few mics actually require the full 48v. My Mesa Rosette acoustic amp puts out 12v. But I don’t use a condenser for that. Too much feedback.

those amps were generally designed with mini back electret mics in mind, suiting most users. Phantom power was in use for a long time at various voltages before it was published as a standard in the 80s, and now has effectively gone back to being a convention without a specific voltage.

There are absolutely pro electret mics like dpa, and some that need full polarization voltage that work fine on 24 volts.

My AER compact 60 spits out 48v or 24v depending what you select on internal jumper settings. Would not be surprised if other high end amps provide this functionality. I only learnt this though the manual so it’s probably not a widely known attribute.

How do you change the settings? I have a Compact 60 and there are no switches for that. Do you have to disassemble the amp?

yeah the jumpers are internal. It’s not something you can toggle between easily although if you are handy with a drill and soldering iron….

it is quite easy to remove the
amp chassis from the cab on a Comp60
just a few screws to remove
